R2-D2 and C-3P0 are possibly the most famous robots in pop culture history, helped by the acting of Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels respectively. So it is with a heavy heart that we report one of these great talents has now become one with the Force. Baker’s niece Abigail Shield has sadly confirmed his passing at age 81, following a long illness. Shield commented “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.” Baker’s manager Johnny Mans added “Kenny was truly a great friend, one of the nicest guys you could ever wish to meet, and a fabulous and talented performer.” Standing 3ft 8 inches, Baker’s charisma made him a giant amongst fans of the globally popular space opera. His further credits include Time Bandits and Flash Gordon.

Around the time of release for last year’s Arkham Knight, the concluding chapter in Rocksteady’s Batman game series, word began to spread that work was underway to give their first two entries in the series a HD upgrade for the current console generation. Confirmation of this release has arrived with the announcement of Batman: Return to Arkham, a set containing HD upgrades of both Asylum and City with the addition of all DLC that was released for both titles. Actor Kunal Nayyar, best known for his role as Raj in the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, has been announced as a guest for next month’s MCM London Comic Con. Nayyar, who plays the neurotic doctor in addition to Vijay in Nickelodeon’s Sanjay and Craig and Gupta in Ice Age: Continental Drift, will be present for the Sunday of the convention. A new companion is about to set foot on the greatest ship in all of time and space and now we know who. The BBC have announced that Brixton born actress Pearl Mackie will portray the brand new character Bill. The announcement comes in the form of a two minute clip as the Doctor attempts to save Bill from his eternal enemy the Daleks, all while trying to avoid the urge to kill her himself due to her enthusiastic chatter and jokes. Mackie’s previous credits include a West End production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and BBC soap opera Doctors (no relation). It is currently unknown when she will debut as Bill in show but dialogue with the reveal clip seems to suggest not until the next actual season, due to air next year.

While fans await confirmation as to if current lead Peter Capaldi will stay or leave when Steven Moffat passes over the reigns of the long running sci-fi, the BBC have announced that we will shortly know who will be joining him in the TARDIS for his next set of adventures through time and space. The current unknown will be announced on BBC One in the UK this Saturday evening during the half time of the match between Everton and Manchester United. Obviously live sport is subject to various extensions so citing a specific time is difficult, though the BBC promises the news will be posted online soon after the on air announcement. The new companion will replace Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, who stepped down last year after two and a half seasons. Coleman joined the show under previous Doctor Matt Smith’s tenure, playing a key role in the storyline celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013.

It was recently announced that following a hiatus which will contain only a Christmas special, Steven Moffat’s final season of Doctor Who will air in 2017 before the reigns are passed over to Chris Chibnall (Torchwood, Broadchurch). Transitionary periods have long been a part of the show’s DNA but everyone has been asking does a new showrunner mean a new Doctor? Radio Times have put the question directly to current lead Peter Capaldi. “I’ve been asked to stay on but it’s such a long time before I have to make that decision.” He goes on to praise both Moffat and Chibnall in summarizing his yet uncertain choice on the offer, concluding “As Steven will tell you, it’s very difficult to say goodbye.” Obviously uncertainty remains but Capaldi’s words offer fans the hope the next era will begin with a familiar friend.

Phoenix Online Publishing and Overflow Games have released a demo for their new fantasy RPG title Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim, set to be released on PC, Mac and Linux from 26th April. The game will combine mechanics such as crafting, combat and puzzle solving in a plot which sees young viking Tyrim set out on an epic quest to rescue the men of his village. Players will be able to take to the seas in a range of vessels to explore an open world action RPG adventure containing eight islands full of memorable enemies to battle and characters to interact with. Lead Game Designer and Artist Jonathan Prytz comments “Now that we’re here, the game is done and we couldn’t be prouder of the title! But so dedicated and beloved is Tennant that he will soon be returning to the role, joined once again by Catherine Tate as his loyal companion Donna Noble.
