UDON Entertainment, longtime publisher of material about fighters and the streets they prowl, has announced Street Fighter Masters: Akuma Vs Ryu for next February. What’s the most basic setup for a Street Fighter story? Fighting, basically. UDON’s latest SF comic gets down to the essentials with the main point of interest being a match between two of the game’s veteran characters: Ryu and Akuma. The reason they have for doing this has yet to be revealed, but UDON is hyping it up like a pro wrestling announcer: Throughout the history of Street Fighter, this ultimate rivalry has raged! Now, the final fight will reach its epic conclusion! AKUMA! RYU!  Both of these tortured World Warriors are now at the peak of their power, weilding unimaginable abilities. There’s a lot of Persona coming our way, suddenly. News leaked yesterday of two titles coming to consoles soon: a remake of Persona 3 and a Persona 5 spinoff game called Persona 5 Tactica. In the latter, you move stylized P5 characters on a grid, position them strategically, and attack with turn-based moves. It’s much like XCOM or those games where Mario meets the Rabbids. But there will also be reading material: UDON Entertainment has announced they’ll be publishing the English version of an anthology manga based on Persona 5. They call it Persona 5: Comic à la Carte, and as its name implies, you get a mix of content: short stories, long stories, and one-off gags from over a dozen contemporary manga writers and artists. The book will feature stories by Yuztan (Dragon’s Crown manga), Kyosuke Suga (Danganronpa manga), Tachibananoneko, Ran, Ueno, Tsukito, Tokiwa, Kazuichi, Ryuuseee, 337, Miyasumi, Kyouichi, and Suga Toshio. Confession time: I’m the only gamer in the entire United States Of America who hasn’t played Elden Ring. The reason I’ve been avoiding it is the same reason I avoided Dark Souls and its sequels — From Software games tend to be brutally hard, and I don’t generally enjoy brutally hard games (except for Cuphead for some reason — that 1930s art style goes a long way). This means I lack the ability to pepper this news item with clever references to the game itself. UDON Entertainment has published artbooks before, but few as hefty as the one they’re starting to talk about: a nearly 500-page volume devoted to the beloved anime Gurren Lagann. It’s one of the largest and most extensive book of sketches and art any anime has ever received. Premiering in 2007, Gurren Lagann was about a teenager who lived in an underground civilization and dreamed of someday seeing the surface world. That opportunity came the day he found the Core Drill, a drill-shaped key that activated Lagann, a large mecha he could fit inside. The comics company UDON Entertainment works with a lot of video game properties, Capcom’s most prominently. They’ve published comics, art books and manga based on Street Fighter, Mega Man, Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Persona, Bayonetta, Bloodborne, and Darkstalkers…which brings us to their latest announcement. One of the more recognizable characters in the Darkstalkers series is the succubus Morrigan, and until now, she hasn’t had her own solo book. UDON plans to rectify that. A 32-page, one-shot comic starring the fighter will be out in early spring, written by Ken Siu-Chong (who has written other Darkstalkers comics) and illustrated by Panzer (who normally works on their Street Fighter books).
