Most of you are familiar with Gurren Lagann as an anime, but not as many might know it was also a movie. Well, in a sense — Gurren Lagann: The Movie is one of those deals where anime footage was re-edited and re-cut into a feature. It’s more than you think, though: the story takes place across two films, not one, and both halves contain over 20 minutes of new material.
Fathom Events has announced the re-release of Gurren Lagann: The Movie (both of ’em) in US theaters — for the first time. In fact, they’ll look better than they ever have: they’ll be screened in 4DX and MX4D formats (where available). You’ll also get a special exclusive message from Director Hiroyuki Imaishi, as well as others from the filmmaking team.
Gurren Lagann is about a teenager named Simon (pronounced See-Moan) who lived in an underground civilization and dreams of someday seeing the surface world. That opportunity cones the day he finds the Core Drill, a drill-shaped key that activates Lagann, a large mecha he can fit inside. His best friend obtains a similar mech called Gurren and when the two combine, they become an unstoppable force both above and below ground. The story gets a LOT more complicated from there, eventually concerning the fate of the universe.
Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End will screen January 16 and January 17 at participating theaters. One week later, Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights In The Sky Are Stars will screen January 23 and 24. Both sub and dub versions will be available.
