Scary Movie Recommendations for this week

Anyone here fans of the Hellraiser movies?

The first one was great, the second one not so bad, but the rest really blow. I'm in the minority that "Inferno" wasn't too bad (could have been a hell of a lot better if the messy script had been straightened up), but the rest are damn near unwatchable. But that's like most horror franchises, really.

The first one's great because it's not just gratuitous gore and Pinhead -- there's the creepy Frank character and his dragging Julia into madness in having her kill for him. Plus it's the rare horror movie that's performance driven than effects driven.

I need to check out The Burning, though...

One (of many) of Saw's problems, though, and it's a problem that mostly every new mainstream horror film has, is that it's way too stylish for its own good. It's overly stylish in trying to make up for its shortcomings. Every performance in that movie was terrible, but what do you expect from a movie that pretty much used their rehearsals for the final product? Besides Elwes, Glover was pretty embarrassing. And I just thought it was one of those uncreative "shocker" flicks that tried too hard to go for overly elaborate death scenes while pretending to have some sort of deep "Seven" like story going on (I wasn't a fan of "Seven" either).

The death scenes in Saw were extremely creative in that they presented the victim's with a simple choice: live or die. John even says in the second film that he's "never killed anybody," which is a really cool concept. The whole "appreciate life" thing may be a little too hardcore for justification of all those grisly murders, but I like that the kills focus on how far the individual goes to stay alive.

I cannot find my VHS copy of Hellraiser. Which means I'm fucked for a movie tonight unless I got a rent it on DVD or something which is something I may have to resort to doing.

I forgot to mention that when I watch these movies with sexy Melissa we don't just watch. If you get my drift, so yeah I'm pissed right now. But there is always a plan B which is renting.

The Fly was a pretty scary movie. When I first saw that movie when I was a little kid I was scared. I have yet to see The Fly 2. I heard bad things about that one.
