Ryukendo has gotten highly overrated in recent years. Some real nuts even claim it to be one of the best tokus out there
But it is a decent show. As far as comedy goes (and the show is a comedy), it's better than Sentai's annoying absurdities in that it's not overexposed, shoved-down-your-throat, but almost Seinfeld-like in its casualness. In the context of the premise (a small town afflicted with local supernatural poltergeistic incidents), it works a lot better than in most Sentais and even Riders. And what a shock, a male role played by a masculine male actor. Gen he can pull off the detective-type character better than Ren Kiriyama does in W.
But it's also the only toku of this decade that Takara was any good with. What made Ryukendo work is completely lacking in the dreadful Tomica Hero franchise, but they still insist on treating it as though it were still Ryukendo.
Lastly, I request more Hiroko Sato performances in future shows, Toei, Takara, whatever. And that girl who played Umi, Kenji's fiancee, as well. What the heck is her name?
