I think it's being a tad bit too critical of the Candroids to write them off so easily, and personally I think it's odd that anyone can get into something as gaudy in design as the Memory Gadgets and not the Candroids that actually have a nice sleek sense of aesthetic going for them.
I don't believe you can be too critical. Not seriously, honestly critical. You can nitpick, sure, and that accomplishes nothing. But if what you watch is good, applying some critical thought generally enhances the experience (for me, anyway). Sometimes it helps me see the good in something that I initially thought was bad.
Now, if you want to bring aesthetic into it, yes, the Memory Gadgets are
hell of stupid-looking.
All of the helper animals (except the Zecters) have struck me as enormously stupid-looking, the Candroids very much included. That's why I am generally inclined to dislike them.
It's just that the Memory Gadgets were
tolerable to me. I didn't like them, didn't buy them, and didn't think about them much. I didn't have to pay much attention to them because they didn't get much camera time. When they did get screen time, they were cute and it was
brief. I can live with that.
Are the Memory Gadgets ugly? Absolutely! So was RevolGarry and the HardBoilder and Cyclone Joker Xtreme and Accel's Red Devil mode and the Luna Joker CGI and most of the giant-size CGI Dopants and a lot of the Dopants of the week and certainly the Clay Doll suit.
Really, there was a lot of ugly **** in W. I'm just willing to get over my gut reaction to a design if the narrative of the thing wins me over or just lets me be neutral for awhile. The narrative of the Candroids is just intensely unappealing to me and they get
so much camera time, a neutral reaction just doesn't seem to be allowed.
Especially when one says that they didn't initially like the Memory Gadgets, I feel the same leniency should be given towards the Candroids.
This comment is a little baffling. Are you telling me that I'm having the wrong feelings? I'd think this would be a "de gustibus non disputantum" sort of situation, myself.
I can't "give leniency" if hatred for something just boils up unbidden out of my gut. I can figure out why I detest the thing I detest, but I didn't sit around trying to think of reasons to hate them. They're just stupid toys. I'd prefer an attitude of cultivated indifference, to be honest.
The Candroids just hit my "detest" buttons instead of my "fun" buttons. I really cannot do anything about that. If I did start watching OOOs again, I'd probably still hate the Candroids. I'd just be ignoring them or snarking about them. I mean, if something isn't my idea of fun then it's just
not.
I will note that I never said anyone should share my feelings, too, I just explained them. I'm perfectly willing to dislike the things quietly, in a corner, only going into detail when asked.
I think that's pretty fair, yeah? I mean it's not like I'm trolling the OOO thread with this stuff unbidden (like some parties inevitably will). I don't spite other people's fun.
I like them because I love the designs, they seem practical to the series, the whole "buy me" thing almost seems like more of a jab at the tokusatsu toy thing since it is in no way being subtle.
Good for you! I'm honestly glad someone likes the things. I can think of nothing sadder than a toy design that pleases no one at all. Unfortunately, we must all view these things through different eyes and I don't think I'll ever see the Candroids through yours. (Nor do I expect you to see them through mine.)
Also, man, I am so sick of "it's a jab at Bandai." Sunrise
also did that with their ugly lazy train robots. They did it again with the ugly quasi-retro GSD designs nobody would buy. It didn't appreciably improve either story, though it gave Might Gaine an amusingly apocalyptic ending.
The "it's a jab at Bandai" thing bored me in the 90s, bored me five years ago, and kind of bores me more now. I think taking jabs at Bandai is the lowest form of writing or creativity in a toy franchise show. I don't care about your Bandai butthurt, toy show guys!
