Regal Deep Cuts Oldboy

Regal Announces ‘Deep Cuts’ Screening Program

Recent trends in the theater business haven’t been all bad. I mean, they’ve been MOSTLY bad, but one positive is that it’s never been easier to see an older movie on the big screen again. Third party companies like Fathom have made it possible for just about anything to get a second chance on the big screen. It seems to have become enough of a thing for Regal Cinemas itself to consider their own version of sorts. Introducing Deep Cuts, a new theatrical program that brings lesser-known yet well-loved cult movies back to theaters for a night or two of glory.

So what’s playing? Deep Cuts starts as soon as next week and here’s the first seven days of films:

  • 11/1: Oldboy
  • 11/2: Bait
  • 11/3: The Handmaiden
  • 11/4: Incendies
  • 11/5: This Is England
  • 11/6: Under the Skin
    • Kids programming: Zathura
  • 11/7: Portrait of a Lady on Fire

The wildest pick here is the original Oldboy, a Korean tale of revenge that has to be seen to be believed. One of the films (Under the Skin, a Scarlett Johannson pic) is so raw there has to be family-oriented counter-programming at the same time, so Regal presents Zathura, the little-known “other sequel” to Jumanji that has little to do with the game at all.

  • 11/8: Thief
  • 11/9: Seconds
  • 11/10: Blow Out
  • 11/11: Bound
  • 11/12: Smokin’ Aces
  • 11/13: The Devils
    • Kids programming: Rise of the Guardians
  • 11/14: Drive

Week 2 has John Travolta in 1981’s Blow Out and the 1996 debut of the Wachowskis in the lesbian heist movie Bound. I had to do a double take when I saw the NC-17 The Devils there; I knew it was getting re-released (through WB’s new “Clockwork” label), but mostly through art houses. A Big Boy company like Regal usually shies away from this kind of film and especially that kind of rating.

  • 11/15: After Hours
  • 11/16: American Movie
  • 11/17: Repo Man
  • 11/18: House of the Devil
  • 11/19: The General
  • 11/20: The Hunger
    • Kids programming: The Dark Crystal
  • 11/21: Vanilla Sky

Week 3 brings Repo Man, Vanilla Sky and The Dark Crystal with it. The General is not a film about the CGI insurance mascot, but a 100-year-old Buster Keaton comedy.

  • 11/22: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
  • 11/23: The World’s End
  • 11/24: Blade II
  • 11/25: Cowboys and Aliens
  • 11/26: Howard the Duck
  • 11/27: Gremlins 2: The New Batch
    • Kids programming: Addams Family Values
  • 11/28: Waterworld

Okay, someone really messed up for Week 4. WHY are Gremlins 2 and Addams Family Values running at the same time? I would have paid for both, you idiots! Also they’re both family friendly; that PG-13 on Gremlins 2 was more like an overdue rating on the original Gremlins. The theme of the week seems to be eccentricity with Howard The Duck, Waterworld and the “black sheep” of the Fast and Furious franchise taking up slots.

  • 11/29: Hoosiers
  • 11/30: Three O’Clock High

Yeah, that’s it. The program only runs through November, remember. Which Deep Cuts intrigue you the most? Maybe Regal will do this again next year, or maybe they’ll leave the territory to Fathom.

Oldboy on a big screen is something I never thought I would get the chance to watch outside my laptop. That hallway fight scene deserves a proper theater sound system. I already marked November 1 on my calendar. Regal finally did something right for once. I hope they keep this program going every year because there are so many older films that deserve a second life. My only complaint is the schedule is too packed, I cannot watch every single movie because of work and money. Still, this is one of the better ideas a theater chain has had in a long time. If this works out well for them, maybe other chains will copy the idea too, which would be great news for people like me who love older films.

Bound and Blow Out on the same week? That is actually a strong lineup if you ask me.

Whoever picked Gremlins 2 and Addams Family Values for the same night needs to explain themselves. Two family movies competing against each other makes no sense at all. This is such a basic scheduling mistake and it ruins what could have been an easy win for parents taking their kids out. I get that not every choice can be perfect but this one stands out as careless. The rest of the lineup shows effort and thought, so this mistake is more noticeable because of that. I would still go watch both if I had the chance, just not on the same day obviously.

The Devils showing at a regular chain is surprising news for me. I always thought this film was too extreme for anywhere besides small independent theaters. Credit to Regal for taking this risk, even if it is only for one night. I wonder how many people showed up out of curiosity alone, since the reputation of this film is wild. Hope it does not get pulled early because of complaints.

This Is England changed how I think about British cinema when I first saw it years ago on a small screen. Now I finally get the chance to experience it properly in a theater. The sound design and the tension in that movie deserve a bigger space than a television. I wish Regal included more international films like this one throughout the program. Still, I am thankful they picked this one at all, since it does not get mentioned often outside film forums. I will be there on November 4 without question. Movies like this need more attention and chances like these help keep them alive for new audiences who missed them the first time around.

Zathura paired with Under the Skin is honestly a funny combination when you think about it.

I did not expect to see American Movie on this list, that documentary is pure gold. Seeing regular theater audiences react to it live would be something special to witness. Most people have not even heard of this one, so I am curious if the showing will be mostly empty or if it will surprise everyone. Either way I am happy someone remembered it exists.

Waterworld on a big screen sounds like a joke until you remember how much money and effort actually went into that production. People love to laugh at this movie but it has some genuinely impressive practical sets and stunts that deserve another look. Howard the Duck being right next to it in the schedule makes this week feel like a tribute to movies that flopped but still have fans defending them. I respect whoever built this calendar for including films that take risks instead of just safe crowd pleasers. Not every pick here will sell many tickets, but that seems to be the entire point of this program. Give these strange, forgotten titles another chance instead of only showing what already makes money. This is exactly the kind of programming theaters need more of right now.
