Annually, CD Projekt Red holds an esports tournament for its Witcher 3 spinoff, the card game GWENT. The 2018 GWENT Open was held last weekend, October 13-14. A share in a $25,000 prize pool was on the line, along with Crown Points and advancement to the next round.
The Gwent Open officially kicked off this weekend. The competition concerned eight professional eSports members from all over the world, competing for a slice of the $25,000 prize pool, plus Crown Points — the ranking points of the Witcher Card Game’s official esports series.
First there was Witcher….then there was Witcher 3…..then there was Gwent, and ultimately, Gwent Open. The card game introduced in CD Projekt Red’s fantasy world has taken on a life of its own, and now has an entire esports tournament centered around it.
GWENT was the playable card game in The Witcher 3 that eventually became popular enough to be turned into its own product. Enough people play GWENT now that it’s led to GWENT Masters, an official esports series dedicated solely to the game. This weekend the tournament continues with GWENT Open, broadcast live on Twitch.
