The first day of Summer Game Fest 2023 wrapped itself with what we were all waiting for: our first serious look at the second chapter of Square Enix’s planned three- game remake of Final Fantasy 7. Called Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, this installment should cover everything from Cloud and Co’s escape from Midgar to [25-YEAR-OLD SPOILER REDACTED THAT YOU PROBABLY KNEW ALREADY]. As much as we enjoyed the recreated Midgar from the first game, there’s a lot more promise in adapting the original’s middle, as it’s where the world opened up and you were allowed a lot more freedom. The trailer released today confirmed a lot of the original locations will be here (the Chocobo Ranch, Nibelheim, Cosmo Canyon). We didn’t see the Gold Saucer, but it must be hiding somewhere. That one’ll be interesting. Yuffie, who first appeared this time in a DLC chapter from Remake, will properly join the team when she’s supposed to. Square delivered their Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary livestream this afternoon, and just like we figured, we got all the news we hoped we’d get. Let’s get to it. First off, let’s start with what everyone came for: first-ever footage from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2, or as it will henceforth be known, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. There are some familiar shots here, mainly from Cloud’s backstory, which as anyone who played the original knows, is suspect when it comes to the facts. Tifa already feels it’s fishy. Square thinks it can get this out by “winter” but if we’re just NOW seeing it for the first time, that would have to be some kind of record and we’re skeptical. Square has also revealed there will be three FF7R games in total. Rumors of a Crisis Core remake have been heating up in recent weeks and….yes, they’re true. At present time imprisoned on the obsolete PSP, the FF7 prequel will be updated with better graphics and republished on everything:

Square claimed it wouldn’t take as long for Part 2 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to show up as it did for Part 1, but….Square says a lot of things. We haven’t heard a peep out of the project since the PS5 version of Part 1 with the extra Yuffie chapter was introduced. BUUUUT….that could change shortly. Square just announced a ten-minute stream devoted to upcoming Final Fantasy projects will take place June 16. That’s next Thursday. In particular, they are promising viewers “a first look at all the information surrounding the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7″…an anniversary they surely wouldn’t want to let pass without some kind of hints at the future, right? We don’t know specifically what hints they have planned, though. At the moment, Square produces quite a few things with FF7 characters in them. They’re planning to release an RPG for mobile phones called Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, and there’s a growing line of merch with Cloud, Tifa and the crew on it. FF7R

As you know, Square Enix will be re-releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake on the Playstation 5 this summer. The new version will feature slightly enhanced graphics and a new bonus chapter that introduces the Remake version of Yuffie. Today Square revealed a few new details about that chapter. The bad blood between Midgar and Wutai was only hinted at in the original, but expanded in the remake. Yuffie is in the thick of it, being from the Asian nation. Here, she’s infiltrating Shinra HQ to steal a powerful materia (allegedly for Wutai, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it “goes missing” afterward). Backing her up are members of Avalanche, who are helping Wutai in the mission. They’ll eventually meet up with the baddie of the chapter, Weiss — described as “the sadistic ruler of Shinra’s top-secret underground research center Deepground.” Yuffie’s signature move is as plain as the giant ninja star on her back. The release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is close enough now that Square feels comfortable letting us take a peek behind the curtain. Inside Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be a series of videos consisting of interviews with the staff behind the game. They’ll share their thoughts on the series, the original version, the choices they made for the remake and the challenges they faced. The first video in the series is out today. According to the video, producer Yoshinori Kitase first approached director Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima about a possible FF7 remake back in 2012. By this point a remake had already been repeatedly requested by fans, but Kitase says he started the ball rolling because he personally wanted to revisit it, as did his peers. Everyone knows how Final Fantasy 7 opens….it’s one of the most iconic cutscenes in all of gaming. A lot of space, Aerith’s face, Loveless Square, in the air, city shot, train wheels hot, soldiers’ fear, now Cloud’s here. So you might think there are no real surprises in the video Square published on Valentine’s Day, which is the entire opening cutscene from Final Fantasy 7 Remake….especially since we already saw it in the demo footage that leaked out last month. That’s where you’re wrong…turns out the demo purposely cut a scene before Aerith even appeared. This time, we get a few extra shots of Midgar and the surrounding area, from a crow’s point of view. We see cars buzzing about, people walking around, kids playing around the cat slide from Sector 5, and the Mako Reactor flaming into life, before the screen fades out and into the Aerith part. The odd thing about this is how…happy everything feels. There is no indication this is Midgar until you see the slide.

There is sound reason to believe Square Enix is about to release a demo for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake. We know this because….there’s no way we couldn’t know. During last night’s Game Awards Square unveiled their latest Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer. There are now several of these out there, the last one wasn’t that long ago, and this new one doesn’t reveal any new areas, or the rumored additional content Square could be putting in to extend the length of Midgar. Square Enix has revealed the US boxart for the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake. And you’ll never guess what it looks like. The image of Cloud holding his gigantic sword behind his back and gazing upward at Shinra Headquarers is so iconic that this box really couldn’t bear any other image. But it begs the question of what the other portions of the Remake are going to use for boxart now that this is taken. And yes, multiple releases are still the plan, though nothing on this box seems to indicate that. There is no “Part 1” in the logo or anywhere else. Someone who doesn’t keep up with game news could see this box, think they were getting the full game, and then feel ripped off. We’re not the only ones that have this concern. We were correct about Final Fantasy 7 getting a new trailer at TGS! Nearly three minutes of new footage awaits you if you have yet to watch this. We get to see more areas of the game than just the Sector 7 Reactor finally (seriously, if I had to watch the Scorpion Tank one more time…) Our first look at Wall Market is in this trailer, as well as our first glimpse of Cloud’s cross-dressing sidequest, though he isn’t shown in the dress. We also get our first hints that some things about the remake may differ slightly from the original…for, example, President Shinra appearing as a giant hologram head rather than making a personal appearance. Tifa is present in one of the Wall Market Gym minigames, which suggests another plot alteration (you were in the market to rescue her in the original). But you were probably more interested in seeing the squat game than the chin-up game, right? Square showed it off last night, in a special livestream playthrough:
