Some questions regarding Densha answered

Well, to bring up a point.

The word "fan" is typically considered an ok term but it did come from the word "fanatic" which isn't a nice term at all.

I just think there are different degrees of Otaku.

Yeah, exactly. It's like calling someone a fanatic, when 20 different people could have 20 different perceptions on what a fanatic is.

You can think that sure, but what if a japanese person heard someone call you that, would they think the same? That's something I sorta missed saying. I would call myself a fan, but never an otaku.

Hope to God they don't think you mean it in an insulting way? You know...unless you do, it's usually in the tone of your voice and the way you say the word.

I thought the whole discussion here was on how unejuhmucated US fans throw the word around? When did Japan get brought into this?

Well, I was trying to get into how the Japanese use it and their general hypocrisies. One example is kyo28's comments of his girlfriend "putting up" with his liking of tokusatsu, but it's OK for her to be bonkers over that Korean actor. That the general Japanese condemn anybody who shows an interest in anime or tokusatsu, despite it not even coming close to true otaku behavior, but those people pointing their fingers all have something of their own they're into, at times in a borderline obsession.

Chances are if you're in a shop buying a tokusatsu DVD, onlooking nibbers will brand you an otaku. People don't care what that really means, it's all the same to the ones who think they're "normal." What I find funny is that people think these guys are just psychotic, but it's really these companies who feed them this junk, almost turning them into otaku intentionally -- they're the ones making hentai and telling you all of Fujiko Mine's turn-ons and turn-offs and her blood type, creating that information nobody ever needed to know in the first place!

Er...I had a point when I was making this post, but I have a mad effin' headache that won't let me think straight. :shakefist

The otaku we see on TV, Densha mainly, ARE exaggerated for comedic effect, much like anything you see on TV or in movies. But the extremity of the character is born from the misconception of each fan as I was mentioning before. Are there a slim few who act as extreme as the ones seen on TV? Probably. But they've probably bought into the "image" or "life" of one, built themselves into what the TV tells them that sort of lifestyle is like. So while the cartoonish image of otaku on TV isn't doing the general fans a service, that is how the "regular" people see them and so...well...**** 'em. You can't change people's minds, no matter how stupid they are.

I sort of don't understand the hatred for fandoms. Those few extreme ones may be obnoxious, but everybody's obnoxious, don't you think? It's harmless -- let 'em be in their Star Trek starship eating their Klingon cuisine, who are they hurting? They're not like gun aficionados who spend their weekends blasting away animals.

Exactly! That's what I've been trying to say! Thank you!
