Ressha Sentai ToQger Ep 6 "What Are We Looking For?"

At least ToQger doesn't treat its female characters as love interests to the exclusion of character development and storylines they could have had. I liked Kyoryuger right up until the point where my previously favourite character started the show as her own person and ended it as Daigo's Girlfriend.

Tokacchi isn't like Shunpei! Although I do wonder why Toei decided that Blues should now be the comic character and Green the angsty tough guy instead of vice versa

It's an interesting question. Shinken Blue was still the skilled second in command despite his uptight nature being mined for comedy. Gosei Blue was clearly written as the smart guy and then it turned out his actor's comfort zone was in performing comedic scenes (similar to how Go-On Black was written as the cool badass and his actor turned out to be far better at being a goofball, so they changed the character to play to his strengths). The trend could have died there, as they were both one-off cases before they returned to a more usual characterisation for Gokai Blue (and to some extent with Blue Buster). I presume that now they're compensating for the recent trend of casting actors in their mid-to-late twenties as blues, for fear that kids would otherwise instantly write them off as 'the boring old guy'.

But then if they are casting guys that age isn't that also something Toei mandated? There was a leaked casting call for Go-Busters requesting male actors aged 16-25, yet they obviously made an exception for Ryouma Baba. In the case of ToQGer, all the heroes are supposed to be the same age and (apart from one scene where Wagon asks why Tokacchi looks old) his age isn't treated as a joke like KyoryuBlue or Blue Buster
