Ressha Sentai ToQger Ep 20 "Smiling Is Dangerous"

It occured to me watching this episode...how come 'Zaram' had a name and wasn't, I dunno, 'Rain Shadow' or something?
Is it just that he was once a high ranking Shadow? I've seen other fansites claim that his name sounds like a Japanese pronounciation of the Arabic word for "darkness", which would fit with the naming scheme of the aristocratic Shadows (Schwarz, Noa, Nero etc). It seems that he used to be Schwarz's right-hand man and not just any old MotW.

That's a sound theory but Lamp Shadow was one of Zed's right hand men, so i assume he was higher rank than Nero, Schwarz, and Noire, and he didn't have a special name. However he was just reduced to another MotW, so I'm assuming that Toei gave him a name to distinguish him more from just a regular shadow monster and go with the whole story about him forsaking his kaijin past and that name. But you're right it seems he was a pretty high ranking well known Shadow kaijin. Btw, BEST ToQger so far

Fair point, I'm just spitballing really

Wasn't Lamp Shadow like an Imperial Guard?

ToQ 20:

- Were these people intending to make Akira laugh or vomit? :redface2:

- Why would sumo wrestlers be funny? *a minute later* Ok, sumo wrestler dancing is kind of funny.

Actually I'm surprised sumo still exists in Japan. The only time I see it is in old movies, books and documentaries.

- The kids don't even flinch at that little play they put on  How cute.

- "This is getting silly." Yes, Hikari. This is quite silly. In fact most of this episode's humor has been how not funny you people are to everyone in town.

- Why would Akira playing his tune on a recorder be funny? Weird, maybe. But laughable?

- Akira and cats :anime:

I'm surprised myself. There's a relatively recent, not obscure-at-all manga about a sumo princess (a girl who inherited her father's sumo dojo and trying to run it), and adapted into a dorama. Also NHK regularly broadcasts those big sumo tournaments.

It's not just sumo, really. Off the top of my head, rakugo and kabuki. It just amazes me how important the Japanese culture is to its people.

That's one thing I like about older tokus: it's portrayal of Japan seems more well-rounded. You see more of the various parts of the country and the culture, as opposed to more modern Toei shows where it's so focused on urban, globalized environments (Probably to cut filming costs: understandable but still sad to miss out on so much stuff).

Tsuburaya on the other hand still captures that "this is what you'd see if you actually went to Japan" feel.

The joke is that a recorder is the wrong instrument if you want to make that western-style "lone hero" entry with a requiem

Such entry is supposed to look cool and awesome, but with a recorder you'll make it look ridiculous instead

A cowboy with a harmonica makes sense. A recorder? Not so much
