Gosei Sentai Dairanger - Talkbaclk

Great episode. Seriously tho, WHAT happened to Japanese martial arts that they don't look like this anymore and that now Power Rangers is schooling the Japanese when it comes to fight choreography.

It used to be like this, what made them change?

The Japanese fight choreography style has always had roots in Kabuki theater and actual karate/judo, and follows a very offbeat timing system. Sentai fight choreography took those concepts and basically just sped them up and added more showy moves. With Alpha Stunts, Koichi Sakamoto and Tatsuro Koike are longtime HK film veterans, so they adapted the choreography/wirework style of mid-80's Hong Kong kickboxing style with the cinematography and film effects of the Japanese style, which is quickly becoming extinct. Most Japanese films nowadays (and Korean films, for that matter) are becoming either HK ripoffs or just over stylized to the point of seeming like a ripoff. Thailand is the only country in Asia really doing its own thing now.

Lately the Sentai fight choreography seems so slapped together now. It's no where near the calibur of what I'm seeing in DaiRanger.

I know what you mean. That's why I'm always singing Justirisers' praises. It may seem like I'm biased, but... I am. They're doing it better.

Keith, this is just the beginning. This is the outcome of watching new Sentai and then checking out the old stuff. I'm right now in the situation again and that's just with Timeranger.

It's just a technical complaint. The fights in Sentai are still entertaining in the scope of how it fits in with the rest of the story and we still get more brutal results from their fights, but technically the fights just aren't remarkable like Power Rangers and this early Sentai stuff I'm seeing.

Just makes me wonder why they decided stop.

I like seeing Daigo, who just by looking at him, you can tell is a martial artist.

Watch some more classic Sentai and you may change ur mind.

Yeah, Daigo kicks ass man. But nobody compares to Ryou (Ryuuranger). He's got the best moves and just kicks all ass. He's probally my all time favorite Red senshi.

I would agree with this. The choreography may not be as flashy and "cool" looking as PR, but in sentai a monster can get impaled on a tree, shot up with ninja stars, or kicked in the head. In PR you're limited to gut or chest punches really. And after seeing the first 9 episodes of Dairanger, I can see now why Saban couldn't use any of that fight footage or the weapons. It was just too brutal for the standards at the time (remember, Michaelangelo from TMNT was de-nunchucked).
