[Discussion] Gosei Sentai Dairanger

Since it's been a little while since the series was fully subbed and released, giving everyone an opportunity to watch it I hope, I thought I might start up a discussion thread for it

I have no regrets in saying that this is probably one of the single greatest sentai series of all time

The plot, the characters, the mecha, the villians, all of it is absolutely fantastic

I love the story arcs for Kou, Daimugen, and Kujaku/Daigo

I really do hope that we get an opportunity to see more classic Sentai shows subbed in the future, namely Kakuranger
Just started watching it. It's pretty epic.

I have to say, that among most of the 90's Sentai series that I have seen. Dairanger was by far the best well-written story that I enjoyed watching. The Daigo/Kujaku part was really intense. I love Kou's story, and Kazu's role as a mentor and former Gorma tribe member was surprising even for me.

Overall, great story, awesome character developments, and good display of climatic events.

Honestly, I liked Kou, probably because I have a thing for excessively pervy characters....

Really didn't understand why the show felt the need to leave out why he was chosen exactly. I thought that it was because of his child like innocence that wouldn't allow him to abuse Kibaranger's abilities, but IDK

And hey, look at it this way, at least he's more bareable than Justin

Yup cause we all know how horrible Justin was as a ranger. He was monumentally dumb, the other rangers had to babysit him constantly and he brought absolutely no value to the team whatsoever. *sarcasm*

Really??? I am SO glad I only managed to watched Turbo when I was a teenager because that way I was able to watch Justin with mature eyes instead of going "Waaaah! He's a kid therefore I must hate him."

1) Because he was young, his experiences were in more of a position to be a positive influence on children.

2) The team acted as a normal team. Blue just HAPPENED to be a kid. When they were all kicking butt the only way you would've been reminded of this would have been through his voice. A.k.a. no babysitting...

3) He was the team genius, there were times when the TEAM needed HIM. Heck, if it weren't for his problem solving at some points, the team would've died.

.. .Leaving Justin to the side because when discussing Dairanger he's kind of a tangent anyway, I really don't know how I feel about Kou.

I'm at the eighteen-episode mark (so two episodes with the guy), and already the major problem I can identify is that Kou, for me, changes the tone of Dairanger a lot and I'm not sure if i like it. The early stuff is cheesy, but it's in a kung-fu movie cheesy way where the character development is transparent or cliched in some ways but always interesting and easy to follow, and some really cool things were being done with the Kiryoku power-ups/acquiring DaiRenOu (that and acquiring the Tenpou RaiRai boil down to my favorite assemble-the-mech arc ever, and also made DaiRenOu not just feel like 'the team's personal mech'- he's something they had to work their butts off for).

Kou doesn't completely change that, but upon his entrance we're suddenly throwing the brunt of the humor that used to be on the monsters of the day just being weird and creepy onto one little kid and his sidekick. I like ByakkoShinken and sympathize with him, but Kou is very... not what I liked in the Dairanger cast (they're all older, more mature- in theory- and stand out in contrast to newer sentai teams, especially since they actually have normal lives outside of being Dairangers). He's not very fun to watch because, at least at this point, it felt like everyone else had to work to prove they were worthy of their powers or was doing something that showcased why they were a worth calling a 'hero'. Kou's big strength is... not chickening out after being laughably irresponsible with his powers.

Also I have never, ever met any ten year old with a libido that exaggerated and the running breast-grope gags are just-

...uuuuuugh. It's creepy. Rin deserved so much more than ending up the target of a prepubescent stalker's sexual harassment :/

Good Sentai, but not "the greatest of the greatest of the greatest". Arcs are stretched as hell. Something like this
- Hey, we we have just started a new arc!
- It's okay, but I have an interesting idea about new arc!
- But what about current arc?
- Just leave It. We will come back for It later.
And almost every arc like this.(Same thing later was in Timeranger - this kind of plot is killing me)
Finale is something that I can name "WTF?!" withouts any regrets. Really in the end, we weren't told about anything, but only left with questions. In some shows same method was just awesome, but here... Okay, I just say finale was stupid as hell.
But of course It is not bad season. Every single Dairanger(Kou included) is rock! Villains won't disappoint anyone too. It has a lot of nice and interesting things. But for me.. Megaranger was really better.

I've never seen the argument for Dairanger as best of the best based on the story. It's fairly generic and, frankly, seems that way by design.

Where Dairanger outshines every other show, before or since, is in action. The stunt and suitwork in Dairanger is simply Toei at its best.

OP/End Music is so damn catchy. :castlerock:

It took awhile to grow on me. The "Kiryoku da" part seemed to cram too many syllables into too little notes that it was hard to get used to.

The ending though was genius, considering the theme. You know it's a Japanese pop song from that time, but the Chinese music influence really comes out in the instrumentation, and its used to its finest.

The only downside for me was that I found the ending hilarious, cheesy lyrics aside ("Chikyuu de Ichiban Tsuyoi Yaru"). It looked like the bikes would slam into each other any moment :D. It's not easy making the bikes look like they're parallel when you're in V-formation and you're turning, heh. Of course the first one's gonna start inclining into the turn first.

I agree. Except for Hououranger, who just seemed to get her own moves from a combination of ballet and gymnastics (would've been better with a 'feminine' kung fu style, like Wing Chun), everyone, suit actors and actors both just exuded 70s Shaw Brother's film. And that work with the DaiRenRods is as close as you can get to authentic Shaolin.
