[Discussion] Gosei Sentai Dairanger

It took awhile to grow on me. The "Kiryoku da" part seemed to cram too many syllables into too little notes that it was hard to get used to.

The ending though was genius, considering the theme. You know it's a Japanese pop song from that time, but the Chinese music influence really comes out in the instrumentation, and its used to its finest.

I don't see how it would be so hard to grow on the opening, I found it to be really catchy and the beginning, I think, brought out that Chinese feel to it. But everyone has their opinions.
The ending theme isn't my favorite ever, but I still think it's one of the better ones. i'm not a very big fan of the jumpy, "Be happy" types of themes. Same with the raps.

But Dairanger holds the spot as my favorite Sentai as of now, with Liveman being my second. I can see how the story soesn't seem as special, but it's the action that really gets to me. And, unlike Gobuster, they seem to have more of a reason for not having Dairen-Oh until Episode 8. Gobuster made it feel like they could've done the combination the entire time, because they already had the mecha to do the combination.

I've never seen the argument for Dairanger as best of the best based on the story. It's fairly generic and, frankly, seems that way by design.

Where Dairanger outshines every other show, before or since, is in action. The stunt and suitwork in Dairanger is simply Toei at its best.

Some of its arcs, like the Ryo-Jin arc and similarly, the arc with Ryo and his father are pretty generic. However, it has IMO two of the better story arcs in Sentai with the Daigo/Kujaku arc and Kou's story arc. I think Jetman (the other hyped 90's series) has a much more generic storyline than Dairanger. Dairanger with its two better story arcs, along with the supporting cast (as well as the main cast), villains, fights, and mechas, holds up pretty well compared to other fan favorite series.

For me it comes down to the choreography and Rin/Daigo generally being pretty damn awesome in the first parts of the show. Generic or not- and you can just hear the "Luke, I am your father" emanating from Chouryou and Ryou's two-parter- I do like Dairanger's writing as a general rule though. I still haven't finished Kou's storyline so I won't comment on that, but in my opinion he really is the weakest link in the series as a character concept (have I stressed how creepy the sexual harassment is? It's SEXUAL HARASSMENT. Deliberate. Sexual. Harassment. IT ISN'T FUNNY.), but building DaiRenOu just made me squee in happiness. I started Dairanger right after finishing Go-Onger (talk about your tone whiplash), and after watching two consecutive sentai where the mechs just seemed like they were going out of their way to debut new configurations or powers every other episode, it was really interesting to watch a story where not only did it take an almost agonizingly-long time and a lot of work on the part of the protagonists for everyone's personal mech to show up on screen, the combined configuration felt like they had done a lot of work just to attain it.

If I had to pick a favorite bit of the show though? Oh god the monsters of the day. They're. So. Freaking. Bizarre. But in a really, really good way. I like the fact that Dairanger bothered giving them human forms who often seem as nonsensical or bizarre as their 'true' forms (even if they didn't always make much sense- what was up with Baron String being an evil ten year old singing creepy songs anyway?)

What's not generic about these two story arcs? They're both pretty boilerplate to my eye.

I'm not using "generic" to mean "bad," mind you. I really enjoyed the Daigo/Kujaku stuff, personally.

I don't see how Jetman's story can be called generic, since most of it is referencing a specific thing. Jetman is a pastiche of Gatchaman, right down to having direct parallels between the two storylines.

Again, that doesn't mean Jetman's story is inherently superior or above criticism. You just can't call a story constructed in that way "generic," that's not really what the word means.

What i like about dairanger are their poses, seems the suit actors and the actors/actress themselves know how their own pose in roll call will be executed. The story line is not bad for me and i enjoy watching. XD
