2014 Sentai: Ressha Sentai Tokkyuger - News/Rumor Thread

Kobayashi as the writer gives me pause, and it really shouldn't: I loved Shinkenger and OOO, and I enjoyed Den-O and what I've seen of Ryuki and Timeranger plenty. It's just Go-Busters, man. I don't think I've ever seen a Sentai series so dull.

Incidentally, I thought Ryuuji was incredibly smug and condescending too.

I think Go-Busters had issues (most of which I don't blame on Kobayashi - though I still hate Ryuuji, and think the main three Buddyroids were dull.) But despite being a bit harsh on the show sometimes, I still really like it. I like pretty much everything Kobayashi has written for Toei except Den-O, and Timeranger is still my favourite Sentai of all time. I wish I knew why I dislike her so much. I guess it's her love for melodrama, combined with creating some characters I didn't like

She re-uses the same types in everything, regardless of producer

I don't think that's entirely true, it seems to be worse than it is because she was paired with Naomi Takebe too much in recent years, even Den-o was co-produced by Takebe. I mean, there must be a producer's influence when the Shinkenger cast of characters is so more popular compared to the Go-Busters...if she always uses the same archetypes, how did that happen?
In fact, i think the Shinkengers were more similar to the Gokaigers (also by Utsunomiya) than the Busters (by Takebe).

I guess I don't see it myself? For me Ryuuji felt similar to Mako and Airi, Yoko felt similar to Chiaki, Gorisaki felt similar to Deneb and Ryuunosuke, and Beet felt similar to Date (although less so than the others.)

I did love Enter and Beet Buster as characters, a whole lot. It doesn't hurt that the casting was about as perfect as it could have been - actually, that applies to Ankh and Date too. If Kobayashi can come up with another character or two like any of these, I'll be happy

Toei Producers: Takaaki Utsunomiya, Akira Ishikawa
What has Ishikawa done before other than Akibaranger? Utsunomiya is the one I wonder about most. From what I gather, the producers dictate the basic storylines, character types etc and then the writers flesh out those ideas and turn them into finished scripts. KR Wizard was a show that had some fantastic ideas but IMO was then written in an unambitious "just another entry in the franchise" style (although to be fair to it's writer, it was his first KR job since being kicked off Hibiki, so I can see why he might have not wanted to push things). Gokaiger similarly was a show that had some good ideas but was swept up off it's feet when Sentai alumni started offering their services and it completely changed the show. Overall I'd say Utsunomiya seems like the type who is very good at coming up with a decent plan, but isn't so good at making sure those plans are executed as intended.
But then I also love Go-Busters's (with the exception of the second OP), maybe they could get that one back??
Aww I will always wave the flag for that second theme, even if I have to do it alone. I still listen to that song at least once per week. Love it.
Man, Kobayashi is busy then. She have JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as well in the Spring.
Well Gaim's writer said he was hired in summer 2012 for a show that just started in September, so it wouldn't surprise me if Kobayashi had been offered the job before Go-Busters had even finished airing. I don't know what the lead time is on anime, but I would guess she'd have also written JoJo a while ago so that they had time to animate it all for the coming spring.

^ Who are you counting as Go-Busters's? Enter's one-episode stint as "Dark Buster"?

The Gokaiger thing happened because the actors themselves asked to come back. Given the circumstances, Utsunomiya couldn't really say no. He did well enough in Shinkenger - I know a lot of people didn't like the Shinkenger villains but a lack of villain focus works much better for Sentai, as an ensemble show, than in Kamen Rider where there is only one main hero. I think his problems on Wizard arose from some generally poor decisions (i.e. Koyomi) and a failure to appreciate that what had worked for him in Sentai wouldn't carry over to Kamen Rider.

I'm pretty sure I read on here at some point that Wizard had the lowest toy sales of any post-Decade Rider series, so maybe that made Toei put the squeeze on the production team again. They've openly stated that the guest appearances in Movie Wars and having the new Rider debut in his predecessor's summer movie had not worked for Wizard, so they stopped doing it.

I agree. Sentai shows are reportedly planned about a year or two in advance, and since they'd decided that this one should target "train otaku", Kobayashi seems like the obvious choice because of Den-O
