The Defects ~ The Adopted Child is Defective. Give Me a Refund.

“The Defects” is a 2025 Korean drama, 8 episodes, categorized as Current Affairs, Survival Action, Crime, Thriller, Suspense, and Revenge; streaming on KOCOWA+.

  • Memorable Quote: “You told me that this kid was smart. Can I get a refund? This kid is a total defect.”

SUMMARY: A man is hired to dispose of “waste”. He never questioned what was in the bag until one day, he opened a bag. It was a young child and she was still alive! A living human being??!! All this time he had been murdering innocent children? From then, he began to open the bags and save the children. But these kids are supposed to dead. They were defective, so their adoptive parents got a refund. How are they going to live now?

♦ I Don’t Like The Child I Adopted. Give Me a Refund.

In “The Defects”, children who don’t meet the expectations of their adoptive parents are returned and they can get a refund. To the public eye, Kim Se-hee is worthy of the Noble Prize, if there were such a prize. She is a highly respected hospital chairwoman and philanthropist. She believes that “only superior genes deserve to live,” and she orchestrates an adoption pipeline that allows dissatisfied adoptive parents to request a “refund”.

Nobody would ever guess that she ran an illegal adoption cartel with her right-hand man, Jung Hyeon. Kim Se-hee’s daughter, Kim Ah-Hyun, would certainly never suspect her mother. Kim Ah-Hyun never had to worry about being returned for a refund. To her mother, she was perfect in every way. If she had a fault, it was probably that she thought something was odd about the disappearance of her friend, Choi Si-Woo, an adopted child.

Woo Tae-Sik got a really good job disposing of waste. That’s what he was told. Although, he wondered why the pay was so good. He never opened the bags. But one time the bag moved. He opened it, and there was a young girl inside. She cried and begged him: “Please don’t kill me.” It suddenly dawned on Woo Tae-Sik that he had been murdering innocent children. The first child he saved was Kim Ah-Hyun. He saved more children after her. The last child he saved was Choi Si-Woo. He was the last because that sweet, poor, frightened child did something that got Woo Tae-Sik killed. He phoned home.

♦ He Phoned Home.  His Mother Was Furious.

Woo Tae-Sik tried to send the little boy, unaccompanied, to the hideout where the other saved children were living. On his way to the hideout, the boy saw a phone booth. He just couldn’t believe his mother wanted to get rid of him. His mother was probably worried about him, and he needed to call her to tell her where he was. The mother was shocked to hear that her “defect” was still alive. That phone call exposed Woo Tae-Sik. The criminal organization realized that he had been setting the children free instead of disposing of them. They came after him. After all, what he did by saving the children could expose the illicit cartel. The children were victims and witnesses. The cartel had to locate them and eliminate them permanently.

Kim Ah-Hyun had to become the leader of the group of children. Her mother thought she was a defect because she aspired to be a dancer in a K-pop group. Even though they were young kids, for the short time they had lived, they suffered an unimaginable traumatic cruelty. The survivors united in a quest for justice and revenge, determined to expose the criminal enterprise. Do they know who they’re facing off against? The cartel system has very deep roots in religious institutions and the judicial and political systems. They’re just kids.

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb: 7.4 out of 10 stars
  • My Drama List: 8.2 out of 10 stars

My personal rating is 9 out of 10 stars.

If you watch “The Defects” (aka “Child Shopping”), you might find it hard to digest. I’m glad it was a short series of only 8 episodes. After the 1st episode, when I realized what was happening to those kids, I wanted to throw up! Just remember that it’s fiction (or at least, you hope that it’s NOT inspired by a true story).

Wait, so you're telling me this is the new drama of the year? A hired killer who accidentally discovers he’s been disposing of kids? That sounds like a wild ride! I’m intrigued, but also a bit skeptical. How do they manage to balance the suspense with the whole “saving kids” angle? Is it more action-packed or does it lean into the emotional side? I need to know if I should commit to 8 episodes or just stick to my comfort zone of rom-coms. 😅

What makes me uncomfortable is the idea of parents returning a child like a broken product. Even though this is fiction, the concept felt believable because it shows the coldness that exists in systems built only for profit. The show might look like a thriller, but to me it is a social warning.

I found the story very disturbing but also very original. The way Woo Tae-Sik slowly discovers the truth about his job shows how a person can live blindly without questioning where the money comes from. The adoption refund idea is not only shocking, it also points to real fears in modern society about how people value children. Kim Se-Hee as a villain works well because she hides behind charity and social respect. Her mask makes the whole operation harder to believe but also more frightening. For me, the scariest part was the child who phoned home. It is such a simple action, but it destroyed everything. The end where the children take leadership for themselves felt inspiring but also tragic because they are too young to face such an enemy.

Kim Ah-Hyun becoming the leader of the children feels powerful. I think her role shows how survivors can build courage even in the most painful times. Her dream to dance in a K-pop group might look small, but it is a symbol of freedom from her mother’s cruel rules.

The acting cast is excellent. Yum Jung-Ah as Kim Se-Hee is a perfect choice because she has that presence of someone powerful but cold. Without her, the character might not feel as dangerous.
