Bloodhounds Stars Woo Do-hwan
Woo Do-hwan started acting in 2011 and was able to land roles, playing lead and supporting characters in numerous films and television series. His fans patiently waited for him to complete his two-year mandatory military service. After being discharged from the military in 2022, he made a cameo appearance in the last episode of Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist Season 2 (2023), and played the lead role in Joseon Attorney: A Morality (2023); two historical period K-dramas. He was cast for the lead role in Bloodhounds, released in June 2023. Fans are delighted that he’s back!
Storyline: A Boxer With Dreams of the Future But Debts in the Present
In Bloodhounds, Woo Do-hwan plays Kim Gun-Woo, a promising young boxer who dreams of being like Manny Pacquiao, a famous Filipino professional boxer. He believes Pacquiao has a heart of gold and wants to have the same heart. But before he can realize his dream he needs to pay back his debts.
It’s not his debt; it’s his mother’s debt. She was deceived by loan sharks and signed a contract without reading the fine print. When they came to collect the debt, he tried to defend his mother against their threats and brutality. The reward he received for his filial piety was a scar on the side of his face. The boss of Smile Capital, a notorious illegal loan shark, scarred his face to teach him a lesson not to insult him in front of his underlings. But the only lesson Kim Gun-Woo learned from that attack was that the fight had just begun.
He became a bloodhound. That’s the street name for the job. A bloodhound is like a hunting dog. Gun-Woo takes a job hunting down loan sharks who are taking advantage of the homeless. All of the activities of these low-life thugs feed into the illegal loan sharking business of Smile Capital. He starts at the bottom and begins disrupting the work of the underlings. The goal is to eventually work his way to the top, i.e. to the boss of Smile Capital, and take him down.
A young amateur boxer is going to head-to-head with a top dog in the underworld? Sounds like David and Goliath. But how is he going to do it? Uuumm … it seems the boss of Smile Capital has a lot of enemies. Kim Gun-Woo has made friends with his enemies. They all agree to work together to crumble his criminal empire.
Viewership and Rating
IMDb Rating was 8.1 out of 10 stars. I give it 9 out of 10 stars. First, because I am a loyal fan of Woo Do-hwan. Second, from this action-packed K-drama, a viewer can learn quite a few self-defense techniques by watching the fight scenes.
