“Flex X Cop” (aka “Chaebol X Detective”) was released in 2024, has 16 episodes, is categorized as Romance, Comedy, Crime, and Action, and is a Hulu Original streaming on Disney Plus/Hulu.
♦ Let’s Play Cops
In “Flex X Cop”, Jin I-Soo, a rich young man, a third-generation chaebol, has a father who announced his candidacy for mayor of Seoul. During the press conference, the mayor hopeful is informed that his son has been arrested. He was not aware of that and when he went to the police station to get the facts, he was so angry with his son that he disowned him.
His other son, an obedient child who ensures the family’s honor is not tarnished and usually cleans up after his younger brother has to “fix the mess”. It was a real mess. But in his defense, Jin I-Soo’s arrest was a mistake. He was not at fault. But life has a funny way of changing things around for you. Let’s back up to before his arrest.
Life is so boring and has no purpose when all you can do is drive expensive cars and have servants that cater to your whims. What to do? What to do? Ah hah! Jin I-Soo has an ‘Ah hah!’ moment and decides to be a cop and catch criminals. Actually, he “plays” at being a cop. One of his employees said: “He’ll risk his life to play.” That’s what the employee said. But according to Jin I-Soo: ‘He’s just bored!’
♦ From Play Cop to Real Cop
Meanwhile, somewhere in the city, some real cops are doing real work. Lee Gang-Hyun is a member of a Violent Crime Investigation Team and they have been trying to catch a murderer for two months. Jin I-Soo was trying to help a friend who had been attacked.
He chased down the assailant, a scuffle ensued, and he prevailed. By the time Lee Gang-Hyun arrived at the scene, the assailant was unconscious and Lee Gang-Hyun was promptly arrested for assaulting a passerby.
Jin I-Soo insisted he was innocent and was only trying to defend his friend. Since the alleged passerby was unconscious the police could not get his side of the story. Jin I-Soo called his friend and had the police question him over the phone about the incident. The friend lied and said nothing happened. WHAT???
Jin I-Soo learned a valuable lesson. If your friend is a junkie (drug addict), they can not be trusted to tell the truth if the police call them! Hence, Jin I-Soo was not released from prison. When Lee Gang-Hyun was told that she had arrested a spoiled rich kid, she was even more determined to prove his guilt and prove that the police applied the law equally to everyone.
However, Jin I-Soo kept insisting that the unconscious assailant had a knife and he was just defending himself. Lee Gang-Hyun wanted to do her job right and by the book. She went back to the crime scene to verify and found a knife. She visits the unconscious alleged passerby, gets his fingerprint, and realizes that the patient is the murderer they have been trying to catch.
Somebody got lucky! That somebody was Jin I-Soo. He caught a murderer that the Violent Crimes Investigation Team had been trying to catch. She owned up to her mistake, told her bosses, and then they gave her a story to cover it up! WHAT???!!
Why can’t she just tell the truth? Well because … his a rich kid, his dad is running for mayor, his arrest was announced during a press conference and that embarrassed his dad, and now there has to be “damage control”.
The chiefs in law enforcement and the people representing the interests of Jin I-Soo’s father came up with a “cover story”. Cover story? Do you mean A LIE? Lee Gang-Hyun wants to know why she just can’t come clean and tell the public the truth. Why does she have to LIE!! Her bosses convince her that the “cover story” is the right thing to do for herself, her fellow team members, and the entire police force.
- Would she rather say that Jin I-Soo accidentally caught a murderer they had been trying to catch for two months and that the police arrested a hero?
Lee Gang-Hyun doesn’t want to do it, but she does it. She goes along with the “cover story”.
- What’s the cover story? Jin I-Soo was hired under a “special hiring process” and has been working WITH the police to apprehend a murderer. Things got a little confused, he got arrested and booked, and the murderer was sent to the hospital and not booked … but in The End, it all got straightened out. That makes Jin I-Soo “look like” a hero and a competent police investigator, which in turn, makes Jin I-Soo’s father “look like” he would be a good mayor.
Jin I-Soo’s brother told him he would now have to do real work because his dad fired him and also threatened to send him overseas. At first, he balked at the idea. But then the light bulb went off in his head. Why be a play cop, when you can be a real cop?
Lee Gang-Hyun, a real cop, can’t believe that she is going to have to work with this spoiled rich guy, who only pretends to be a cop. Unbelievable! There is one thing that is predictable about life and that is that life is unpredictable.
- Jin I-Soo (played by Ahn Bo-Hyun, “My Only Love Song”, “See You in My 19th Life”)
- Lee Gang-Hyun (played by Park Ji-Hyun, “The King in Love”, “Rookie Historian”)
Viewership and Rating:
- IMDb: 7.9 out of 10 stars

- Kyahaha: 7.4 out of 10 stars
My personal rating is the same as My Drama List: 8.2 out of 10 stars.
“Flex X Cop” is a predictable combination of lighthearted comedy, romance, action, and crime-solving. Plus, Ahn Bo-Hyun is adorable. The moral of the story is clear: Living your life without a purpose is not so bad (if you’re rich). But living your life with a purpose is so much better.
