If you paid any attention to Nintendo fans during the Wii era, you likely heard about Zack & Wiki: Quest For Barbaros’ Treasure. Developed by Capcom, it was praised as one of the few Wii third-party games to not use the Wii remote in a gimmicky or unnecessary way. Generally, it was known as “the best game no one played,” since everyone spoke well of it yet its sales were never very hot. Don’t make the same mistake twice. Zack & Wiki will be on sale again when it comes to the Wii U Virtual Console tomorrow. It’s only the ninth Wii title to make it to Wii U digitally, and it will cost $19.99. Currently the disc version is cheaper on eBay, but most of the copies are European. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 will also be available starting tomorrow. Early last decade, Nintendo released a port of Super Mario 3 to the Game Boy Advance, confusingly titled “Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.” This version of the classic platformer had some hidden levels within that were all-new, never seen before, and created just for that release….but you needed a peripheral attachment to unlock them. The E-Reader, to be specific, Nintendo’s strange experiment that put data on cards and had you run them through a scanner attached to the GBA. Without the E-Reader — which few people bought — you couldn’t play those levels at all. Nintendo is about to release Super Mario Advance 4 in Japan, and they’ve announced that the game’s lost E-Reader levels will at last be accessible to everyone. If you download the game, you’ll find all the bonus levels already unlocked. So far this feature has only been announced for the Japanese version, but I can’t see why they wouldn’t do the same elsewhere. Fans have not forgotten about the lost SMB3 levels.

iD Software was one of the pioneering studios in video game history, virtually inventing the modern 3D shooter with Wolfenstein 3D and later Doom. But before that, they attempted to land the job of porting Super Mario Bros 3 to the PC. Nintendo had never actually asked anyone to port the beloved NES classic — then fairly new — to home computers, but iD figured if they made a functional port and showed it to Nintendo representatives, the company could be convinced to give the project their blessing. A new coding method had been created by one of the developers that allowed for scrolling in all directions, among other vital functions very few PC games had at the time. In honor of the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros (which happens to be today), as well as the release of Super Mario Maker, the UK arm of Nintendo has released a new video starring Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto.
