The Minecraft Movie Is Back On
Warner Bros. has made a mint off The Lego Movie and its subsequent spinoffs. Now they’re looking for the next hit, and the stereotypical execu-think is to find the most similar thing possible. What’s popular and closest to Legos, mechanically speaking? Minecraft! WB purchased the rights to a Minecraft movie in 2014. Ideally, they would have had a movie out by now, but the Hollywood machine doesn’t always run smoothly, and what’s been stalling the Minecraft film is a common problem: they can’t pin down a director. Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and even Steve Carell have been attached to direct at some point (yes, Carell was going to direct). Now WB feels they’ve found the right guiding hand: Peter Sollett, director of the critically acclaimed “Raising Victor Vargas,” but more commonly known as the guy who did “Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist.” Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Jon Berg are listed as producers, and Mojang, the creators of Minecraft, will oversee for authenticity. The news was broken by Variety, who also

Final Destination Could Be Resurrected
Did you know the Final Destination series got its start as a rejected pitch for an X-Files episode? How cool would it have been to see Mulder and Scully try to outwit Death itself? But that never happened, and instead New Line Cinema bought the pitch in movie form. There are five Final Destination films in existence, all with the same threadbare plot: there’s this group of young whippersnappers. One of them has a prophetic dream warning them of an impending disaster that will kill them all. Because of the dream, they avoid the disaster….but the Grim Reaper is so mad, he decides their deaths now have to be ten times as ridiculous and over-the-top as they would have been. So each individual member of that group unwittingly enters a room full of deadly traps and objects, naively positions themselves in the path of danger, and a crazy Rube Goldberg chain reaction lacerates them in inventive and insane ways until they bite it. There’s a fright factor in having Death
Stellar Interface Launches On Switch
Portugese developer Imagination Overflow has combined the traditional space shooter with the exploration elements of a roguelike to create Stellar Interface, which arrives on Switch today. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more powerful spacecrafts with new gameplay styles, but your enemies will evolve as well. The Wii U Is Already A Collector’s Item
When the Wii U was discontinued one year ago, we warned you they were only going to become more scarce from there, and that it was the perfect time to either buy one (if you didn’t own one) or buy a complete-in-box sealed unit (for investment purposes). Now’s the time to either cash in on that investment, or kick yourself for not listening to us. The common belief would be that the Wii U holds no value, because everybody hates the controller and half of its good exclusives have been ported to the Switch now. One thing, I disagree about the controller….second thing, Switch still doesn’t have a Netflix app (this is the main reason I still have my Wii U plugged in)….third, there’s plenty of value left in Wii U. And we mean “value” in both the fun factor and the financial sense. The Wii U had the lowest production rate of any of Nintendo’s home consoles, with just over 13 million out there. Complete and untouched Wii Us
The Punisher Season 2: Second Trailer
It wasn’t that long ago we got our first trailer for The Punisher Season 2. It was just last week, in fact. But as we pointed out then and will re-point out now, Netflix is rushing this season out so they can wash their hands of all things Marvel and, by extension, Disney. Why help their future competition? So…two trailers in two weeks, and the actual series not too long after that (NEXT week). The previous trailer was focused entirely on Jigsaw, Frank’s new enemy that he wound up creating during the climax of the previous season. In the comics, he’s called Jigsaw because they had to reconstruct his face Frankenstein-style. Here, he’s barely scarred, which makes him look more vain in his act of revenge than anything else. Good thing he wears a mask that distorts his mug properly. It’s in this trailer that we get our first real look at the season’s other villain, John Pilgrim — a fundamentalist who frequently breaks the Commandments. We find out Frank
New Premiere Dates For The CW’s iZombie, The 100 And More
The CW’s midseason lineup is on the way and it’s time to start juggling shows again. The good news is that iZombie finally has a premiere date. The not-so-good news is that it’s a four month wait. This is the fifth and final season for iZombie, and seeing as it’s a dead show walking (how ironic), The CW has given it the dreaded summer run, announcing a premiere of May 2. It will run Thursdays at 8. Of course, The 100 has managed to survive for several seasons in a summer slot, so maybe it’s not too bad. THAT show will premiere its sixth season April 30, taking up the Tuesday 9 PM slot currently occupied by Roswell, New Mexico. Before either of them come back, Jane the Virgin will return first, also running its final season starting Wednesday, March 27. It’ll continue to run Wednesdays at 9 until its episode count runs dry for the final time. This may not truly be the end for Jane, as The CW
Bungie And Activision Split, Cite Irreconcilable Differences
Video game publisher Activision and five-star developer Bungie have decided to see other people. In the biggest breakup since the Bezoses, Bungie will once again become an independent studio. This is divorce #2 for the company, who once produced Halo for Microsoft. As for who the kids are going to, Destiny will remain in Bungie’s custody. “We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny,” said Bungie in a new blog post. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.” Generally these days, it’s much more common to read about mergers and acquisitions. Big companies growing bigger. Scrappy young start-ups being swallowed into massive corporate machines. Last year alone, Microsoft purchased four video game developers and turned them into second parties exclusively serving the XBox. So at first, it
Vision And Scarlet Witch Is Moving Forward
Back when Disney first announced their streaming venture, we were told it could happen. Now we know for sure Vision and Scarlet Witch will be a TV series, or at the least it’ll get as far as a pilot. Jac Schaeffer, one of the four screenwriters for Captain Marvel as well as the writer for the upcoming Black Widow movie, has been hired to oversee the production as well as write the script for the pilot. Unlike the majority of Marvel’s live-action TV projects over the last few years, this show will be directly tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will use the actors from the feature films (Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen). The tale of the tender romance between a sorceress and a robot was first told in the 1985 comic book by the same name. Vision and Wanda got married and, through some incomprehensible process of magical cybermancy, Wanda gave birth to Vision’s kid. Though their couplehood is no longer intact, Vision and the Scarlet Witch were
Fighting The Sky Comes To DVD February 5
High Octane Pictures is bringing their latest sci-fi spectacle, Fighting the Sky, to DVD and VOD early next month. Researchers are detecting something strange emanating from the sky….a series of bizarre sounds. Is it just an unusual creation of nature, or a sign of extraterrestrial visitors? If you’ve already glimpsed the header illustration, you know what the answer is, but ufologist Lorraine Gardner will have to figure it out on her own. And she’d better do it quick; a war is brewing and being caught off-guard wouldn’t work out well for humanity. Fighting the Sky stars Matthew Ward, Nicole Ann Hicks, Alison Headrick, Jinette Faraj, Judith Faraj, Brianna Burke, Bailey Weaver, Logan Roberts, Ed Conrad, and Larry Cahill. It features visual effects from Corey McCauley, most famously known for creating the centerpiece of Kevin Smith’s Tusk. Fighting the Sky will be out on DVD and digital formats February 5. Strange other-worldly sounds are echoing around the world. A group of researchers, led by expert ufologist Lorraine Gardner, begin an expedition
Cat Person, you would prefer to hoard cats than date a psycho
Cat Person is based on a short story written by Kristin Roupenian. Published by The New Yorker in December 2017, the story quickly went viral online. What made it go viral? Well, most of us have experienced a terrible date at least once in our lives – the kind of date that we reluctantly gave a chance, only to find that we couldn’t establish a connection. This often leads us to the tough decision of rejecting the person. While some individuals gracefully accept rejection, understanding that a relationship without chemistry isn’t worth pursuing, others react to rejection with obsession. Now, the viral short story is being adapted into a psychological thriller directed by Susanna Fogel. Fogel is well-known for co-writing the underrated film “Booksmart” and is also one half of the creative team behind “The Spy Who Dumped Me.” The film stars Emilia Jones, Nicholas Braun, and Geraldine Biswanathan in lead roles, supported by an ensemble cast including Isabella Rossellini, Fred Melamed,Liza Koshy and Hope Davis. Despite his portrayal of a
Dungeon Full Dive Releases Demo
Earlier this year, TxK Gaming Studios announced Dungeon Full Dive — a virtual TTRPG tool that allows the game master to recreate a game’s world and its characters in full 3D. The software is still not complete, but if you’ve been itching to try it out, now’s your chance. TxK has released a full demo for Dungeon Full Dive on Steam, which has active VR support. The software allows GMs to not just describe their world but build it and venture through it. Compatibility with VR headsets lets players literally become their characters. Crossplay between the PC and VR versions will be supported, so you don’t need your own headset to play, but it’s a bonus. Dungeon Full Dive will be 5e compatible and let players lift their stats directly from D&D into the game, then create miniatures only limited by their imaginations. Build Your Own Maps: Whether it’s in the icy peaks of the mountains or a monster-filled forest, you can create or modify battle maps using the in-game
