The Minecraft Movie Is Back On
Warner Bros. has made a mint off The Lego Movie and its subsequent spinoffs. Now they’re looking for the next hit, and the stereotypical execu-think is to find the most similar thing possible. What’s popular and closest to Legos, mechanically speaking? Minecraft!
WB purchased the rights to a Minecraft movie in 2014. Ideally, they would have had a movie out by now, but the Hollywood machine doesn’t always run smoothly, and what’s been stalling the Minecraft film is a common problem: they can’t pin down a director. Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and even Steve Carell have been attached to direct at some point (yes, Carell was going to direct).
Now WB feels they’ve found the right guiding hand: Peter Sollett, director of the critically acclaimed “Raising Victor Vargas,” but more commonly known as the guy who did “Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist.” Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Jon Berg are listed as producers, and Mojang, the creators of Minecraft, will oversee for authenticity.
The news was broken by Variety, who also gave us the most specific description of this movie’s plot yet: “The story follows a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers who, after the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
If all goes well, the next news about the Minecraft movie will be the voice casting. Otherwise, the next thing we hear will be who the NEXT director is in 2021…..or we’ll hear nothing at all.
