Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger EP 10 - "Zandar! Gold's Return!"

I agree with this. I really think some people are just determined to hate him because he's cheerful, optimistic, loud and hyper and they consider those bad things in a character - look at the hate Gentaro got.

I don't believe in holding up ShinkenRed as the gold standard of writing a Red Ranger, either. I really think that to a lot of the fandom, the Shinkengers are the ideal heroes and the Geki villains are the ideal villains, and if a new series doesn't do its heroes/villains just like them, people will complain.

As a fan of Takeru's ShinkenRed, I found Daigo extremely likeable, and I must say a much better Red than Hiromu's Red Buster. While it is true that he doesn't really have any weaknesses (even though they kept pushing the "fact" that he isn't too bright, while he's the one who always come up with solutions), I found his charisma and leadership to be rather charming, and he's the main engine that drives the show forward imo. However, I don't think they have ignored the rest of the Kyoryuger, and that is one of the best things about this series thus far, ten episodes in. And although this episode does seemed to suffer some lazy writing, particularly at wrapping up KyoryuGold's return, I found him to be extremely impressive and he has a better entrance than other Sixth Ranger in recent memory.

Daigo can be a bit annoying at times with the "Call me King" shtick, but he's really not a bad character imo.

Sage and Lynxara pretty much covered why some don't like Daigo. Everyone doesn't think the Shinkengers are the epitome of sentai heroes or Rio and Mele the epitome of villians. No one is saying that or mentioned them. Daigo is just the "perfect idiot". And the whole "Call me King" thing bugs me.

He isn't an idiot. He is just very blunt and upbeat. And the call me king thing.. It's his nickname. I am sure we will learn why he has it at some point.. And if we don't.. Oh well. Seems like a monumental nitpick.

I think Lynxara pretty much nailed what my issue with Daigo was in eps 7, 9, and 10. Aside from those three eps, I've been fine with the character. I really hope Sanjo does a better job with his focus eps though. I realized that this was a similar issue I had once with Kai (MagiRed) in the past (even though this isn't too much the case now).

As for the reds that have been getting mentioned recently, I like Takeru and Marvelous, but I hate Hiromu. But hey, I also like Alata, Sosuke, and Jan. So I'm perfectly fine with any type of character I get for a red. I do think it's quite silly that Daigo is getting slammed by many solely just for the fact that he's happy and energetic.

As for the whole Gekiranger having the ideal villains thing... maybe in the States. In Japan, it's the complete opposite, which I think is very unfortunate. :redface2:

It's time to bask in the radiant warmth of a golden light. :)

--"A lot of crazy stuff happened last time" Yeah, no ****, narrator! GET ON WITH THE SECOND HALF ALL READY! >:(
--Great, the fart battery again... What's worse is, I can smell it. It's one of those powerful stenches that blends in with the dry heat that comes with a summer drought in the middle of a desert or Texas or something. :nono:
--Amy's foot skills just made me invested in a fetish I never cared about before... Wow, I rwally need a girlfriend.
--Finding out how to beat the attack on your first try? Well done, King! I know he was drawing on previous experience, but still! Muchos kudos.
--I like how this team operates. Even when alone, they can hold their own. That's the sign of a stronger Super Sentai. :coolshades:
--A robot tyranno with an extending long neck... Instead of constantly saying the obvious phrase I always say, I'll just rephrase it. Tokusatsu, constantly proving I haven't seen everything just yet! :D Keep it up, toku. I would love to see you throw more strangeness my way.
--I like how they don't need all 5 signature weapons. They can combine them in various ways and reinvent their purpose. That can take a meh weapon and make it all kinds of redeemable. :anime:
--On second thought, maybe learning how to beat that electric slash wasn't such a great accomplishment after all. King just kind of easily dodged by stepping out of the way, there...
--WOAH! Cyan came back to help kick some ass with Torin! HECK YEAH!!!
--Well, seeing Pteraidenoh restored is pretty cool, but I'll still miss that cape. :disappoin
--There he is. Kyoryu Gold. In true 6th Ranger tradition, he gets a glorified introduction battle, his own unique arsenal, and his own theme that I absolutely ADORE! And is that Psychic Lover singing it? That's epic on many levels. I love when a series puts emphasis on the music like this.

--I hope Gold doesn't become like GoseiKnight or other 6th Rangers like him. Belittles the main characters, doesn't think they are worth their time. I'm sorry, but that doesn't make a character badass to me. Just makes them seem like a jerk. :170:

Well, that seems to be it. How many Rangers do you think this show will have before they're done?

I've always had this belief about Super Sentai teams. 3 Rangers is their minimum, 5 Rangers on average, but they should NEVER have more than 10. Will they ever get up to or surpass 10? Will Kyoryuger be the one to do it? Either way, I think this series is well on its way to proving it's more than just a light hearted one-off. It's got some serious potential. :)

No one in this thread is saying that about Shinkenger/Gekiranger (except Hidden Masta ...) However, if you look at the fandom overall and other sites, there does seem to me to be a popular view that those shows are the "ideal" for heroes and villains respectively. Maybe just my opinion - we all get what we look for.

If a character has badass moves, I honestly don't care whether they "earned" it, maybe that's why I like Daigo while others don't?

This is really backwards. You're almost saying you prefer Mary Sues. Which, yeah Takeru had his moments, but to be honest when someone's better than everyone else but is damn near killing themselves to be so, in my eyes they deserve it.

That's got nothing to do with toy design and everything to do with bad writing, though. I mean, Carranger made fun of that, back when there'd only been a handful of sixth rangers at all. I'll give PteraGold's intro arc for trying hard to break some of the rigid cliches that have built up around sixth ranger introductions, but that one they clearly just couldn't figure a way around. It stands out even more by virtue of Kyoryu Cyan having shown up first, and having gotten introduced as just a normal character (which, weirdly, makes him more memorable).

Part of it I think comes from them having tried so hard to break the cliches. Like someone else said earlier in the thread, the power levels are fluctuating too much here. The team had largely rescued themselves when Gold got free, so what's the purpose of Gold transforming at all? I think it might have been a better idea if the team had just saved themselves and Utsusemimaru had just wandered off into the distance and they saved his transformation scene for the next episode.

Then again, for that to work I think the two monsters they had this episode that were made up of Rage/Sorrow/Happiness should've been saved for the next episode as well to have a believable villain the main five couldn't get over. They wouldn't even necessarily have to BE a threat to the Kyoryuger so much as maybe Dogold attempting to kill Utsusemimaru since he couldn't control him anymore.

At the end of it all I feel like it pretty much comes down to they needed more run time than they had to properly fix this.

I've never had a problem with Tendou, Marvelous, Tsukasa or other characters accused of being too powerful so ... maybe I do like Sues? :o

I was never a huge Takeru fan just because I find it very hard to warm to aloof characters, but I can see your point, you're probably taking a fairer view of him than I would

That's pretty much been a big problem with the show as a whole; the show seems like it's on a total caffeine high and needs to...

Of course no show should try to copy Geki's villains. Simply trying to imitate that greatness would result in immediate failure! It would be like generic soda next to Coke. The secrets to Geki were locked away in a vault for none to see.

Then, why did BladeRun try copying them?

The red samurai may be Utsusemimaru's former lord and who could have possibly betrayed him. Could possibly be a former Kyoryuger, too.

I'm waiting for the obligatory Souji vs. Utsusemimaru episode.

King = in Latin, Rex
Gabutyra = Tyrannosaurus Rex

It's just a joke about Daigo's partner dinosaur. It also quickly sums up why Daigo is Red: he's a good leader/ruler who uses his abilities to nurture the people around him.

Daigo, personally, probably has no idea why people call him King, or what it means in English, or why people don't want to do it sometimes. To him, it's probably just a funny nickname.

Yeah that's what I got out of that nickname. The thing I like best about this show so far is that the team is doing stuff. I mean really doing things. They work together to figure out issues on how to beat monsters. They go through trial and error to get things right.
