All those hoping for the never-ending Alien franchise to follow up on the most recent film, Romulus, just had their hopes dashed today: Ridley Scott has long indicated he wants to make another movie in the series and he appears to be making his move. THR reports that the next movie will instead be a sequel to Alien: Covenant, Scott’s attempt at redefining the lore that he started in Prometheus.
But is he directing? Maybe not. Scott has been solidified as a producer, with the director still undecided. The chosen script writer, Aaron Guzikowski (2013’s Prisoners), is hard at work on the plot…which, we can confirm, will most likely involve the third appearance of Michael Fassbender’s David character.
People once dreamed of Scott returning to Alien, but now they probably wish he’d go away. Granted, those dreamers existed at a time when the latest movie was Alien Vs Predator Requiem, and you can’t get lower than that — but they also wish it could get better. A lot of the prequel lore Scott has attempted to establish has been outright rejected by the fanbase, like the Space Jockeys not being a cool mysterious race of alien giants, but humanoids in suits that only make them LOOK alien. We just pretend that didn’t happen.
20th Century Studios has not outright said a sequel to Romulus is cancelled, but it is unlikely they would put both into production at the same time. TV is a different story; the second season of Alien: Earth is currently being worked on simultaneously.
