What pisses you off?

What on earth makes PR not Toku? They use footage from a Toku show!

Some fans agree that PR is American Toku but MANY Toku fans disagree. It's all opinion I guess. Then again someone could dig up some facts that could prove otherwise and believe me Shougo is one to do so.

Now this thread continues to be exceedingly off track!! It started off as a thread about general things that "piss you off", and it somehow lead into an arguement about Power Rangers and whether it should be considered as Tokusatsu. CURSE YOU MICHAEL BROWNIESHIT!!!

To me, it would be hard to decide if Power Rangers was Toku or not. On one hand I'd personally consider it as "unofficial Toku" because it takes footage from a Japanese Toku show. Same goes with VR Troopers, blah blah blah.. but sometime I think "but then again, what about Robocop, Star Wars, blah blah.. is that Toku". But since I'm not a big fan of Robocop/whatever and I rarely watch these films, I just think screw it then!! Let's just consider Toku as "Toku", Power Rangers and it's buddies as "Unofficial Toku" and the rest as "The Rest".

As for Anime, Anime is used to refer to Cartoons made in Japan as Manga is for "Comics made in Japan" (also not forgetting Anime originated from Manga). Personally I find it very hard to tell the difference between Anime and.. erm.. Cartoons. Anime is most known for it's characters with bright and shiney eyes, which to me is cute but not much of a big deal, Anime looks more realistic than say.. The Simpsons / whatever, but then there are cartoons in America such as that Batman cartoon from the early 90's.. then there are stupid people who refer Anime as "Animated Pornography" because they have this stupid stereotypical (and probably untrue) view that everything Japanese has to link to Sex and Porn*. I have no idea, maybe they're perverted by Japanese people or something..

One Japanese friend of mine (I'll keep her name anonymous) refers cartoons like The Simpsons, etc.. as Anime, but only because Anime is the Japanese term for Animation. After all, The Simpsons is "Animated". :P When I told her that people in the US and the UK refer Anime as Japanese Animation she thought it was pretty weird. And sometimes this kinda make me wonder why we do this. Is there really a big difference or are we just seperating Japanese from American?

Hmm.. oneday when German cartoons such as "Werner" become popular in the US, they'll all be categorizing it as "Zeichentrickfilme" :P

*Everything Japanese has to link to Sex and Porn?
Yeah right!! Tell that to Hello Kitty!!!

Regarding sentai vs PR...wait a minute. I forgot, because...what the hell's happening to this place!?! It's turning into alt.tv.sentai where it's just going to eat itself to death because of threads like this, isn't it?

I just want to say that it's stretching it a tad to call PR "toku," though. That's like calling Spongebob Squarepants "anime." There is a difference, like it or not.

Oh, and Shougo's important safety tip for the day: next time there's some idiot posting nonsense and calling everyone names -- ignore them. Don't talk to them like they're normal -- they're not!

That's a bit of a stretch there.

Calling Power Rangers Toku is like calling Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon, the American dubs anime. It's the same material and genre, but through an American filter.

Bottom line tho, with this answer comes to whatever you want to believe and whatever you hold the definition of Tokusatsu to be.

To the "hardcore" if it ain't Japanese, it's not Toku. End of story. These people will not budge.

For me... if you got guys in rubber costumes and guys who transform to drop kick them... it's a Toku of some type or form no matter what race is making it.

For some people it's soooo important to be 133t that words alone take on titanic importance that must be defended at all cost for the purity of what they like.

For others like me... it's just words. Watching these shows is more about fun and imagination than race. My enjoyment begins and ends with the production I'm watching and its own merits, not what race of person is behind the mask.

So, there's no answer other than the one you want. You can't argue it, because it comes down to what you want to believe and nothing else.

Nah, I got nothin'.  It's like I said, I think there's a difference, but you can't change how people think (because if you could, I'd make nobody like Faiz). For me, it has nothing to do with "Bah! Only stuff that's made in Japan is toku," but the fact that the people behind these shows are so uncreative on their own that they must remake the Japanese one and splice out 90% of the footage. If they tried to be original, same concept complete with their own suits and ideas, I could be like "Wow, we have an American tokusatsu." But with PR being a remake, I just feel that it loses something in being placed alongside the others.

It's like that terrible "Psycho" remake (that's been plaguing channels of late). It's a shot for shot remake, but that doesn't make it a Hitchcock flick. It's just an impostor -- instead of adapting the novel and doing its own thing, it could only survive on the work another did. PR's the same way, just as those cartoons that are drawn in a style that want so desperately to be an anime are nothing more than impostors. PR fans want badly for these shows to be "accepted" and be seen as equal to their Japanese counterparts when they're simply remakes, and remakes can never surpass the source material, they're inferior by default. However, my mind is still blown that PR still couldn't improve upon Ninpoop Sentai Hurricanger...how the hell did that happen? There was nowhere but up to go, and they still managed to make it a crap fest!

It's that if PR did its own thing, it would be easier to call it a brother amongst the tokusatsu genre. But with it depending on sentai so much, it's like a cousin. You're related, but...you don't need to be that kind or accept them that much, you only see them once every so often, and when you do, they're usually coming to borrow money or something from you. Which is PR's relationship with sentai.

That is so true.

See, making broad generalizatiosn like this kinda irk me. I'm sorry, but I enjoyed Power Rangers in Space more than I have any Sentai or Tokusatsu. Not because of race, or who made it, or what came first, but based on its own merits and incredible creativity the expanded and developed the Power Ranger Universe into a better one that anyone ever expected. It's not lack of creativity... it's that these people have a job and are doing the best they can with what they have.

Sometimes better than others.

If they tried to be original, same concept complete with their own suits and ideas, I could be like "Wow, we have an American tokusatsu." But with PR being a remake, I just feel that it loses something in being placed alongside the others.

Comes down to business. With the formula that's been developed with Power Rangers everyone stands to make MUCH more money, but adapting the already made material instead of starting again from scratch.

And some, wouldn't want them to. Kids in America like Power Rangers. Fans of Power Rangers like Power Rangers. Sometimes the American version brings more or different stuff to the table, like PR in Space or Lost Galaxy.

It's like that terrible "Psycho" remake (that's been plaguing channels of late). It's a shot for shot remake, but that doesn't make it a Hitchcock flick. PR's the same way, just as those cartoons that are drawn in a style that want so desperately to be an anime are nothing more than impostors.

Well, again it all depends. What you're doing is like what white supremesists do... "All black people are bad." "All Power Rangers is nothing but a shot for shot remake and uncreative."

Where as a fan, I look at each series on its own. And saying that PRiS or LG, ****.. even DT were uncreative is just insulting.

This is false. Shows like Totally Spies are wildly successful, even tho they mirror anime styles.

PR fans want badly for these shows to be "accepted" and be seen as equal to their Japanese counterparts when they're simply remakes, and remakes can never surpass the source material, they're inferior by default.

Another phrase that's about as accurate as, "All black people are inferior to white people by default. They want to be accepted as equals."

As a black person, I could give a frell if some white guy accepts me as his equal as a human or not.

And as a fan of Power Rangers, I could care less if it's "accepted" by people who've made up their mind without seeing the show or grading it on its own merits. Lost Galaxy and Space were not simply remakes, but expansions of the Power Ranger mythos in their own rights.

By no means am I going to say that PR doesn't owe something to Sentai for is origin, but PR at its best is still some of the best children's television created in the US and I do mean all it takes to edit and write what they do and adapt it how they do.

Andros, KO-35, and just a lot of other stuff.. but these people aren't God and they do have limited time and budget to create what they do. The stunts pulled off in PR lately far surpass that which is in Sentai.

You make it seem like all they do is sit about eating donuts and because they smugly "rip off" the original material, it appears on the screen magically.

However, my mind is still blown that PR still couldn't improve upon Ninpoop Sentai Hurricanger...how the hell did that happen? There was nowhere but up to go, and they still managed to make it a crap fest!

This is all in opinion. Martial art-wise they school the hell outta Hurricanger and there's a good chunk of the fandom that enjoyed it. Because I or you didn't doesn't mean that Ninja Storm was a failure.

I'll address the rest later.

Wow...... bullshit. By the fuggin' ton.

PR is Sentai's brother and together they have a lot of fun. Sentai gets more money because Power Rangers helps sell more toys so everyone makes more money. Where the frell do you get they estranged cousin that comes to borrow money comaprison from?

PR does have its own thing. If you'd watch the show you'd know this.

Good Lord, so that means you call the movie "Steel" with Shaq a toku?

Yes, to those who want to be anal, the Japanese use tokusatsu for any little thing with special effects in it. So, when they CGI Gary Sinise's legs off in Forrest Gump, I guess that makes it a tokusatsu...And yes, geezers in Japan refer to every cartoon and comic as "anime." But...this isn't Japan. To the non-Japanese, tokusatsu represents a very specific thing (of the hero/kaijuu variety) while anime is a very specific thing (the flashy Japanese stuff, not just any cartoon that wants oh so badly to be an anime, such as JL or the MOTU remake).

I think some of you just cause this discussion for the hell of it -- you know very well PR isn't a true tokusatsu just as you know the damned Rugrats aren't anime. Here's some more for you -- The O.C., what a great little dorama. Hilary Duff is some wonderful J-Pop! Entertainment Weekly, what fine bathroom manga that makes...it's just not worth arguing over. The PR fans will insist that PR is toku until they're blue in the face, so...

Like I said, it comes down to person definition of a word... that's just a word.

You're being just as immature by standing steadfast by the opposite opinion to the point of stating incredibly inaccurate comparisons.

How's this different from a PR fan calling Sentai "gay?", aside from being on the opposite end of the spectrum?
