The original ULTRAMAN is almost critic-proof, because it is a recognized classic and a cornerstone of the genre -- many younger fans (people under 30) may not "get it", but ULTRAMAN is where it all started, really. While there were heroes before it, this was the series that created the biggest sensation -- which is why, 40 years later, new Ultra Series are still being produced. For its time, ULTRAMAN was a slick and expensive production -- the most expensive Japanese series ever made. For me, ULTRAMAN is one of the most important Japanese superhero series ever created. It's influence cannot be underestimated or ignored -- or dismissed. When watching this series for the first time, bare in mind what came before it, and what was its competition at the time -- and most of all, have fun watching the series.
