Ultraman Max - Talkback

Last three episodes:

Two weeks ago: Gomora! I missed this one unfortunately, so I'll have to wait to see it on DVD or something (Max starts coming out this month)

Last week: A really, really unique episode, with...well, a really unique monster. Pretty cool, darker episode.

Today's: If you're a fan of the original Ultraman, you might explode while watching this episode, because no fewer than three original cast members from that are in it! Also features the debut of a new mecha for DASH.

Next week, one I'm really eager to see: the return of Metron-Seijin.

This one is worth waiting and watching! Wonder if it'll be as gentlemanly as in Urutorasebun!

Yes! Its like the classic Ultraseven episode!

I've seen that same pic from the side in a couple magazines (ala the original one with Dan) and there's a ton of a great in-jokes going on- Metron figure on the floor, 6 Ultra brothers poster in the background, and oddly enough, a model of the Eyeslugger on the table! (You can spot the last on in that pic Basri posted) It's awesome that they're putting so much into that one little scene. Judging by the preview, this episode looks awesome.

Another thing I've noticed that's interesting- Metron is stitched together down the middle! I wonder if they'll tie this into the original episode, which ended with him getting sliced in half down the middle by Seven.

I hope its something like that, too. Making Max and Metron fight during the sunset will be even better, just like in Ultraseven! About getting sliced in half, I'm hoping that will happen. Metron got sliced by that Eyeslugger -- Metron in Ultraman Ace also got sliced in half!

Well, I just saw the Metron episode. I think some might be disappointed with the ending, but overall, I'd say it's going to be in my top 10 Max episodes. What really sets this one apart from other "classic monster" episodes, is...

it's a sequel to the original Seven episode with Metron! Yes, same location, similar themes, and even stock footage! They very discreetly manage to not mention Seven by name, but you know he's there, cuz who else would slice Metron in two? :P

As I theorized, this Metron is the same as the original, who is later found and sewn back together (!) by this old guy! That's unique.

This time, Metron is making people go crazy with cell phones (he quit smoking I guess) but there's a little more than meets the eye to the old "take over the world" plot.

The ending "battle" is very short and more silly than anything else, but it's still cool- they even got Metron's UFO in there! And seeing Kaito and Metron decide the fate of the world with a game of Janken is now going to be a legendary Ultra moment.

There's a lot of other little references and in-jokes to the old Ultra series, including some surprise cameos!

That guy who was the TLT commander in Nexus is also in it as an ill-fated scientist.

I think I'm going to go ahead and put Max as one of my top 3 Ultra series. It's just THAT good.

Any fans of the classic Ultras from the 70s will surely love Max. And they got the sunset in that scene, just as I was hoping for.

Yeah, that was awesome. The scene where Kaito confronts Metron also had a lot of other cool junk in the background, including a Baltan figure and poster of Mephiras. I wonder if the latter will also show up eventually (Baltan better get to appear- he's been in the OP credits since day one!)

And Metron has his own brand of tea! It comes in Metron-styled cans, I hope we actually see that released now.

A new episode, and another spin on the classic "Good alien and evil alien" storyline (there was one of those in Ultraman Taro as well as Ultraman Tiga.)

What was unique about this episode is it focused heavily on the good alien, Keef, with the evil guy not even coming in until near the end. And there was no apparent connection between them at all- Keef is simply an explorer who comes to earth and possesses no weapons. During the ending he's sort of shocked to even be seeing Max and the evil alien go duke it out. Sort of like an Ultra Seven episode, they actually touched on some deeper themes such as the paranoia people have with aliens (since they're mostly always evil) and question the whole premise behind Ultraman in general, to a degree. It's cool to see Max can mix goofy episodes with more serious ones, and still make them work (whereas the more serious episodes of Ultraman Dyna felt kinda...force to me. That show was at its best when it went all-out silly, like in the Garon episodes.)

Koba is pretty trigger-happy in this episode.

The ending battle was pretty badass. Max continues to rock. :jam:

Next week: Elly-themed Christmas episode.

(...is reminded of the 4Kids episode implying that Japanese is an Extraterrestrial Language...)
