Uchuu Keiji Gavan THE MOVIE - 10/20 2012

The movie opened at number 5, which is a bit lower than Sentai and Rider stuff, but probably better than expected given that Gavan hasn't really been around in a while.

I thought it was really good, but again, I'm just approaching it on a "I like Gavan" level. I imagine if you feel about Metal Heroes the way I do about Kamen Rider, you might find more to dissect about what the movie does or doesn't do, and so on.

Even still, I do think leaving Watari out was a misstep. The Replacement Sheriffs do okay with their very limited roles, but since they're credited as "special appearances", it seems weird why they didn't just go the extra step.

They're just there to set up for a sequel if the film does well. Next time out original Gavan is a cameo at best and Type-G is the leader of a trio of Space Sheriffs.

The movie did ¥75,192,339 for its first weekend. It seems to be pretty low, even compared to the Sentai Vs movies (Shinkenger vs Go-onger did ¥145,097,488 and all the Gokaiger ones were much higher than that) - and Sentai Vs are already low compared to Rider movies...

I think it was also the only new movie this weekend, so that's...yikes. I do hope it manages to have some longevity in its run.

Look at allllllllllllllllllllll of the frigging promotion Toei put into it.

I'm calling it -- it's the John Carter of toku movies.

Expendables 2 opened up the same day, and I think something else. This weekend there's something like 8 movies opening up, so poor Gavan's going to get crushed.

I wonder if making the visual of the new Gavan more modern would have helped? It seems like with this movie they were aiming straight at the nostalgia crowd and no one else, but that plan seems to have failed...
