The "I actually liked Go-Onger" topic

Oh yeah the Pollution Ministers (and Hiramekimedes)! I loved how they were a cohesive, almost family like unit, instead of always scheming and backstabbing each other like is so common nowadays. They were a team and understood the power of teamwork, Yogoshimakuritein lost because he sacrificed everything for his own power, including the Ministers while the Go-onger united as one.

Maybe to him it is nitpicking. I didn't like GO-Onger for many reasons. I don't think my reasons are nitpicking, but for him maybe they are.

So someone could have the most thought-out, fair, detailed explanation of why Go-Onger is a bad show.... and he can just write the whole thing off as nitpicking without actually considering the reasons? Are you kidding? Where does the relativism stop?

No that wouldn't be nitpicking. That would be a thought-out, fair, detailed explanation of whhy go-onger is a bad show in that persons opinion. And yeah people can just write it off. You can hate a show all you want and give long detailed explanations as to why you don't like it, but that doesn't mean you are right. It just means you have a personal preference. I mean I could give long detailed reasons why I didn't like Decade, but I don't bother. They are my own reasons, and I would rather talk about shows that I enjoy.

No they can't. It's one thing to like a show that someone else doesn't. But that doesn't mean you can just flippantly say the other person's reasons to dislike it are essentially irrelevant (ie: nitpicking). And you can't just hide behind the tired "opinion" defense.

I like Ryuki. Lynxara and NeonZ for example don't. But do I just wave off all their criticisms as just dumb trolling? Of course not. I can still see the validity in some of their arguments. I don't say all Ryuki haters are just nitpickers who can't be satisfied like Wing Saber apparently is doing here.

Well there is no point in saying you like or dislike a show without giving reasons, is there? It doesn't exactly help the progression of threads by just saying "I like this" or "I hate this" and leaving it at that. Why don't you just give your reasons? It might just provide something to chew on.

I'm sorry to say but yeah a person can say anothers opinions are irrelevant. Sure they are relevant to the person that thinks that way, but why should anyone else be forced to agree with them? I mean you hate a show, you give reasons to hate that show. And? I mean people can listen or ignore those reasons.

If you say you hate a toku and you give reasons why you hate it. If A person choses to read your reasons great, if they chose to say you were doing nothing but nitpicking then that's what you were doing to that person.
You might have greatly thought out feelings on said show, but they are your own feelings. No one else has to think the way you do. It seems what you are saying is that if you have some deep thought out opinion on a show, that if a person doesn't sit and listen to you then they are wrong. That is just nonsense.

It's not dumb trolling no one ever said it was. If you listen to them on their feelings on Ryuki that's great. Good for you, but that doesn't mean others have to. They can just feel as though it's nitpicking or wrong. I don't mean any offense to those two people I am just trying to make a point. You listen to their criticisms, others don't. No one is wrong there.

Sure I prefer people to give reasons, but that doesn't mean they have to. If a persons says I LOVE THIS SHOW, good for them. If they want to give reasons why, then that's great.

If someone had a valid reason to hate a show, I have no problem with that. But when that person start ripping it apart for every small detail, then I feel that it's nitpicking.

You can say my opinions are irrelevant, but what if I'm not arguing a matter of my own opinion? What if I say, "It's intellectually dishonest that Go-onger is about "fighting pollution" when the series is itself an ad for toys made with ecologically destructive manufacturing processes?"

This is a point of argument that would have basically nothing to do with my opinion of the series (which is "needed to be funnier"). To argue the point I raised, you'd need to be willing to discuss any one of several very objective issues.

1) Is it intrinsically hypocritical to use toyetic properties to promote ecological themes? How does Go-onger compare in that regard to, say, Captain Planet?
2) Are the Bandai manufacturing processes employed in making Go-onger toys particularly destructive to the environment?
3) Are the toys ecologically destructive? Can they be recycled? If sent to a landfill, would they be able to biodegrade?
4) Does using a conservation theme in an otherwise comedic and light-hearted children's show trivialize the seriousness of the issue?

Now, you could dismiss my concern as unimportant or maybe personally uninteresting-- but I don't think you could dismiss my point as basically not meaningful. Not without engaging with it and actually constructing a coherent counter-argument based on factual, falsifiable assertions.

Anyway, my feeling on criticizing a show is that you shouldn't do it in any of the show's main threads unless you're watching it regularly. It's just rude. If you dropped a show at episode 4, nothing you say about it is likely to be all that interesting to someone who's on episode 37.

I think it's okay for criticism to come up in secondary threads about a series, particularly when it's part of a broader conversation topic ("I dislike use of two-episode arcs in Kamen Rider and this is why") or part of a post-series post-mortem on the show (like the post-series W threads).

So for instance the stuff I'm posting about Go-onger I would only post now in a thread like this, that's about looking back on Go-onger. Actually I find it pretty interesting to read why people actively liked the show, since I couldn't get anything out of it myself.

Though I found Go-ongers irrevocably dumb, there were a few points in the show I did enjoy, some jokes I actually laughed at, and come concepts and ideas I earnestly enjoyed. I wouldn't necessarily say I liked it, but I do admire the good things it did and the instances where inspirations shine penetrated the irksome muck of monotony.

I do think the show get far far FAR more hate then it deserves but I'm not going to get into that one. mostly because I think more then one persons probably mentioned it before.

Go-Onger was a nice and pleasant series that really embraced the light-hearted and kiddy aspect of Super Sentai, and that wroked for it, along with the positive eco-friendly message, and the character interactions and relationships worked really well

So much for "eco-friendly". Go-On didn't even touch on that theme all that much from what I saw.
