Samurai Sentai Shinkenger - Talk Up!

Looking back on it I think one problem I have with Genta is the simple fact that I feel like any needed comedic function was already being (better) served by Rynosuke and to a slight degree by Chiaki's bullheadedness when the show started up. Upon Genta's arrival, Rynosuke basically feels like he doesn't have a lot to do anymore.

I don't completely hate Genta because there are things about him that are fun but I think there is an extent to which he kinda JarJar's Shinkenger. Of course Shinkenger has other problems to.

That and I never did get over the guy having a piece of sushi as a henshin device. Objectively I really not actually sillier than the Shodophones but for me it just kinda tips over the line into a level of wacky that I'd likely be fine with in a CarRanger type series but I'm just not sure about it here.

Hey man I think you're kinda tired over there. You mean Shinkenger's Jar Jar, not Jar Jar's Shinkenger, don't you? :)

I actually used JarJar as a verb on purpose basically as a short-hand term for when a hyper-wacky comedy relief character is injected into something that is more or less straight faced and already has comedy relief characters to begin with. Just as Star Wars was doing fine with it's Laurel and Hardy in the form of threepio and artoo. JarJar is like making those guys play second bannana to Steve Urkel.

I think that they dropped the ball with Ryuu, period. It was established at the beginning that he took to heart more about being a samurai and retainer than all the others combined. He should have been the one with the quest or at least partner to Mako on her quest to find the truth. Warning signals should have went off in his head when Takeru snapped at him and Kotoha when they resolved to do what they were supposed to do: protect him with their very life or die trying.

Ryuu got no rival and once Genta came along his role as class clown was even taken away. They could have at least given him the satisfaction of having figured out something wasn't quite right with Tono but that was only giving to Mako for some odd, boring reason which also served to give Ryuu the shaft plot wise. Can you imagine the adventures the two could have had trying to figure out the truth behind Takeru? Their character dynamic was actually interesting and left a gaping hole when they were separated.

Since we already knew that Takeru could kick the crap out of Juuzou maybe it would have worked that Ryuu be the next one to kick the crap out of him or even kill him that second go round. Who didn't know Juuzou was going to lose to Takeru again? At least against Ryuu there would have been some wonder.

Edit: Genta is actually my second favorite character of the series. Kotoha is my favorite even if she didn't get to shine as much as the others.

It was to push her as the leading lady of the show and set up ship tease with Takeru as a fanservice thing so they could make money off her image. I also hate the way Ryuunosuke was made to appear horrible and disloyal in 46-47 for wanting to stay behind with Kaoru, even though he was just trying to do the thing he has always been brought up to do ie. serve the head of the Shiba. Plot-wise Chiaki probably got the shortest end of the stick though; at least Ryuunosuke got the conclusion of arc where he vows his undying loyalty to Takeru and then got to deliver the first fatal blow to Doukoku, whereas Chiaki gets no real payoff for his character.

^^But that doesn't make sense because she was already the leading lady of the show (Kotoha had deferred to Mako's judgment early on in the series) and the ship tease thing was Kotoha and her crush on Takeru. My guess is they wanted to give Mako something to do and as big sis of the group and the samurai who acted the most like a samurai she would be the one to push for the truth.

Since Takeru was a shadow and Ryuu (second in command) was a Takeru fan boy he he could not see the truth. . . real leadership and hard realities fell to Mako(third in command).

I just answered my own question about Ryuu, but him being in on the 'something being wrong with Takeru' storyline would have been interesting, to say the least.

The fanboy in Ryuu battling with the Samurai part of him to seek the truth and Mako reacting to Ryuu's overreacting would have been awesome. She was the most interesting with her interactions with Ryuu and Tayuu.

I didn't see a relationship between Kotoha and Takeru at all, that one episode with Takeru being the butler seemed strictly on friendship level to me, never got that. But I did defintely get the Kotoha/Chiaki vibe countless times.

I didn't see one either. I said a crush that Kotoha had on Takeru was the ship tease and not Mako trying to ferret out the truth from Takeru. I saw chemistry between Kotoha/Chiaki too but didn't strike me as the romantic kind.

My main problem with Ryuunosuke was him being treated as the butt of every joke in the show (once or twice this was Takeru eg. "Neko!Tono" and having him faint after eating Mako's food, but he was the hero so it was different.) With Genta you were encouraged to laugh with him not at him, but not so with Ryuunosuke. He was like AbareBlack or MegaPink - everyone piles on him.
