Samurai Sentai Shinkenger rumor/picture thread

What I learned from that picture:

That man can do two things, act bland and act bland while looking embarrassed.

I find him very cute but he looks so bored in most of his pictures, like he's thinking "Can I go home now?" He may not be Laurence Olivier but as Takeru's repertoire has all of two expressions (bored or arrogant), Matsuzaka is adequate.

The problem is not that Takeru's range of expressions is limited, it's the actor who make those limited. Someone more capable would give a troubled Lord like he is a whole new world of expressions and emotions that he is not able to deliver; as you said, bored and arrogant, and no more. And when he does the arrogant one, he looks still bored, so it's neither a good arrogant display. He's nice? Sure. He can act? In a few years, maybe, not right now.

Well, usually the writers write the characters first, then they'll choose who to best portray him/her through auditions and stuff, so I think they wrote Shinken Red to be a stone-faced guy who would rather be alone than have followers, given that, they chose a model with no acting experience coz its probably cheaper.

I imagine "bored" is supposed to be "detached" and "arrogant" is supposed to "lordly" and you get the former instead of the latter because the actor doesn't really know what the hell he's doing. I just find Takeru's performance terribly wooden and try to pay more attention to script itself than how it's being read.

This is why I said that Takeru is a shitty role, if not strictly speaking a shitty character. Takerus are common enough in anime where you can get a perfect line read and perfectly composed art to make a character reserved but still somewhat expressive. Trying to make that kind of character feel natural in live-action is going to take a trained or experienced actor, since body language will be extremely important.

Matsuzaka, bless him, clearly has no idea what the hell to do with his body language. He can emote when the script tells him to emote, but the whole point of Takeru is that most of the time he's not emoting through his dialog. This is a guy where you should be able to constantly watch the performance closely, looking for clues as to what's really going on with him. The way Matsuzaka plays him, Takeru's just a cold fish.

Toei should've cast someone more established as Takeru. Chiaki would've been a much better role for a debuting model-turned-actor because he's more grounded and acts more naturally. He'd be a lot easier to pull off.

 IIRC, this is tori's first acting role. while shogo is doing a good job at being chiaki (because let's face it, the character of chiaki just requires you to be modern, somewhat of a jerk and be a teenager [easy, just channel one or 3 of your classmates]), the role of takeru needs more acting prowess and as you said, body language is definitely needed.

matsuzaka definitely has the voice to act as if he is a tono-sama, but the body language just isn't there. really good actors could have sent the message that he's a fake by the middle of the series without it being blatantly said in the script or in the story sequence.

they did a pretty good job of getting aiba to act for ryuunosuke since the character of ryuu also demands a lot of acting.

i think sentai is a decent way to give models and beginner actors a feel of how to act for t.v. but IMO, shinkenger actually demands more than your run-of-the-mill sentai because of its jidaigeki theme and the plot.

Yeah, I've actually really enjoyed Aiba's work as Ryuunosuke in this series. He's got a good knack for different types of comedy. It was a little sad to see him get less humorous screentime after Genta showed up.

Especially if you consider that Genta is not funny, he tries so hard and fail. Though, even in this case I guess it's the actor's fault. He's horrible, he always looks not natural, forced, and sometimes he have to convey certain feelings but he's not able, just like Takeru.

Can't be helped since Toei was probably thinking that only kids will be watching the show and will not really notice if the actor is good or bad.

And when you look at it, it seems to me that it was Tori's fault that nobody realized they were setting up hints throughout the series that he was a decoy, he didn't act it well enough for some to think that "no wonder he acted that way before".

Well, if they gave it away halfway through the series, it wouln't be a "twist"! I've been wondering what his deal was ever since he got called a "liar," so while it's still a surprise that he's a decoy, it's not like I'm shocked and flabbergasted, or anything.

And flabbergasted is an awesome word, by the way.

Yeah, my point being, it should have gave you the feeling of; "No wonder he was acting that way..." sort of thing now, although I know I did realize it and a couple of others too, but looking at the Shinkengers summary thread, it seems they didn't get that feeling.
