Practical Effects VS CGI in Toku

Can't stand CGI in Rider and Sentai as of late. For Rider they use it a lot more now more than ever so its irking.

Sentai it annoys me because they replaced real sparks with CGI, along with explosions. I personally feel like it brought down Sentai to a level of mediocrity. Yea, those things are very simple..but for me it makes Sentai noticeably different in a bad way. Watching the fake sparks is almost painful to watch, as odd as it sounds. lol

I figured this time around since the Go-busters are using KR suit material more or less, they'd bring the real sparks back, but nope. KR is still hogging them.

There's not a log of "hogging them" per say. It's just they aren't using the same company to stunts for Rider and Sentai iirc.

i still maintain that practical effects should be used as often as possible, i don't mind CG but when given the option between a miniature, puppet, etc. I will more likely than not choose that over CG. But i regards to explosions I prefer a little more CG added to them only because it allows for more variety in regard to things such as color, effect (like a smoky explosion, or a sparkly one or whatever), shape (having it end in the shape of a skull for instance) but i would always want there to be a real explosion at the base:thumbs:

I like practical effects, but I can understand them wanting to use CGI for explosions and sparks and stuff like that; that stuff is dangerous, so if they can spare the guys in suits from getting burned or concussed, I'm not going to complain.

Besides, it's not like the sparks and explosions are remotely realistic in the first place, so why not let them be completely and entirely fake?

I don't mind CGI as long as it doesn't look awful. Gavan's dragon thing in Gokaiger vs. Gavan looked dreadful. That being said, the Showa Riders' kicks in Mega Max looked fantastic.

Personally, I wish Toei would use more practical uses, especially on creatures and characters that come out horribly in CGI due to their lack of budget on the special effects. I'm sure it probably has something to do with cutting costs, but I cringe whenever I see something like the Supernova'd Cancer Horoscope in Fourze which looked like it came straight out of PS2 console. If Toei knew they can't do a good job with them, why not just create a rubber suit for them and use a mixture of miniature and movie magic to make the illusion of size on the screen? But Toei probably doesn't care because they don't think young kids will know the difference, anyway.

I do wish they'd put more effort into using more practical effects. Stuff like Fourze and Meteor jumping with their bikes with a huge explosion behind them. How they shot the Naraku forest in the original GARO. One thing I miss with todays' toku is that with CGI, there's a lack of actual stunts. The Fourze special had clips of Ichigo doing all sorts of awesome moves, and some in really dangerous places. You don't see these kinds of stuff that often anymore.

I don't mind CGI too, as long as it looks realistic. Stuff like Cancer's Supernova form looks ridiculous. The Power Dizer looks okay. But CGI does bring new stuff that weren't possible before without CGI. The best example I can think of right now though, is Ultraman. The use of CGI in the Ultra Galaxy Legend movie was great. Suddenly, the Ultraman (men?) weren't just slow, lumbering giants, they could move as limber as hell.

The best middle ground I can think of is Fourze's jetpack. Using wires and some CGI for the steam makes it look really legit, with minimal CGI. Koichi Sakamoto sure knows his stuff.

Speaking of practical effects, I'm interested in how Hidaki Anno's Nausicaa spin-off toku short's going to turn out, with the guy saying that he'll be using more practical effects instead of CGI.

On one hand, explosions were the best in the 70's, on the other, it's better that they're all cgi now since it's good for Earth.

That's the sole reason why I'd prefer cgi with explosions. As for everything else, it needs to improve, I still don't get why does it still look like it does. Until then, different live methods should be used.

I have the hope that someday cgi will allow more freedom, to do almost anything possible in a series.
