I always thought Eiji's attitude around Ankh just made him look like an idiot. Everything else about the series also seems to reinforce the idea that we're supposed to think that Eiji is just an idiot.

Everyone in the series who we're supposed to find intelligent (like Goto) does not entirely trust or like Ankh. To me that's a clear sign that we're not supposed to regard Ankh as a nice guy, what with him being a demon hand and all.

Ankh is likable as he is. But that doesn't mean one should fool oneself into considering him a good guy simply because he defected.

I wouldn't call him likable, he is charismatic. Ankh is a psychopath.
