Personally, Tokusatsu because I was never fully into American superheroes. The suits looked better in tokusatsu and I'm more intrugued by the genre.

I still like several American-made superheroes but aren't into learning too much about them.

i've had people telling me i'm childish and to 'grow up' when i rave about Tokusatsu. :laugh:

Wah!!! Singaporean sia~ Lol. I don't think Singaporeans dig spandex-less heroes. Just that our TV are dominated largely by American shows. Some more Smallville, Heroes etc are telecast at prime time slots. Even the Rangers telecast here are American Rangers, which gained support from kids. They didn't know Rangers are Japanese originally. And the Ultras were either American or Australian, like Powered and Great.

Think the closest Japanese Rangers we were exposed to were Fiveman, which was shown on Channel 8 around 10 years ago, dubbed in Mandarin. But seriously, which normal audience would watch TV on a 9am Thursdays when you have school or work?

As for Ultras, the only Ultra having enough decent exposure was Tiga, and it made local kids know what's an Ultraman. Too bad there weren't any other followups, except the Malay-dubbed Tiga and Dyna in Suria Channel. Come to think of it, the Malays and Indonesians were more supportive of Japanese shows, seeing Black, Gavan, Ultraman Jack, Leo, Ace, Taro etc

If you ask a kid do they know what's 'Mystic Force', they'd go 'Hell, yeah~'. But if you ask them about 'Majiranger', they'd look at you with blur looks.

With weird English dubbed shows like Masked Riders, Ryukendo and Sazers, they make the shows sound silly. Therefore hard to attract older audiences. The English dub of Ultraseven was so bad, it really made me and my friends stop when it aired 20+years ago. Zearth was already campy enough, plus silly-sounding English dubs, it made the show look worse.

Seriously, if we are to be exposed better to Japanese SFX shows, Mediacorptv should consider having a dedicated hour to telecast these shows in orginal sounds with English subtitles, like what they are doing to Japanese animation in Okto.

Anyway, for me, I think it's not fair to compare between American Superheroes and Japanese Superheroes. Each culture has their unique qualities.

But if you ask me, I prefer American superheroes to be in animated form, while Japanese superheroes stick to live-action shows.

And I prefer them in orginal formats, not re-adaptions. Look at the American Rangers. The American Masked Rider. The Western Ultras (excluding the USA animated movie). The Ring, American version.

The plus point about Japanese SFX shows, it makes us want to own the gadgets like Rider Belts, Drivers, morphers and the dream to pilot a Super Robot.

For American, I'd rather they stick to animations.

I honestly prefer American comics. Japanese superheroes, whether toku or manga or anime, are really my backup when I can't make it to the comic book store. :redface2: But it's never really about the country of origin in the first place.

I love both American and Japanese superheroes (tokusatsu, anime, and manga), because I grew up with them.

I've always grown up with the likes of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Wonder Woman and others. Gradually, I got into superheroes like Ultraman, Super Sentai, Masked Rider, and many others!

In the field of Japanese SPFX superheroes, they are everything American live-action superhero productions (other than the 60s Batman and 70s Wonder Woman) wish they could be! Japanese live-action superheroes wear colorful costumes, fight equally colorful villains (mad scientists, nazis, spacemen, or other superpowered menaces), and a whole lot more (including giant robots and monsters). And they look like a live-action comic-book or cartoon show! And while the Japanese have had this in abundance, American studios are usually afraid to even try to emulate comic-books, out of fear of silliness/campiness or lack of absolute realism (which is why networks prefer non-costumed power fantasies). But for their TV budgets, the Japanese have one thing American studios lacked: imagination! And these shows are way ahead of the "drama" American studios tried to inject into their own shows of the type.
