What makes Toku less acceptable than Marvel?

"Is this the Japanese version of Power Rangers?"

We know those replies very well, and I could understand that people would reply with these if they saw Sentai, but the fact is, that they will give this reply to almost any Toku show they see except for Godzilla.
Now, I do understand that some Toku shows can be a little bit silly, and the special effects may not always be top-notch, but when I sit down and compare Toku to the western super hero franchise, I fail to see the logic.

Most of our heroes wear tight body suits. Wearing their "underwear" on the outside of their clothes is fairly common too.
Then you have a toku hero like Garo, wearing a fully armored metal-suit. There is NO trace of spandex ANYWHERE. Yet, people will STILL say "This is like Power Rangers... gay"

Am I blind? HOW can people compare that to PR? What MAKES them compare it? It is the same deal with KR. They have armored leather suits, just like the newer Batman designs have.
Are they compared to Batman or Iron Man? No. They are compared to... POWER RANGERS.
Even Metal Heroes get the PR-stamp, and they are even further away from Sentai than KR is.

What are your theories on this? Is it really the rubber suits that make the whole difference?
Garo used full CGI for the monsters, just like most Hollywood movies do today, yet it was still labeled as another PR-copy.

I wonder... let us say that we had a KR show were every villain was a human wearing a costume, would it still be seen as Power rangers, or would people actually accept it?

Power Rangers has become the figurehead for the genre. Just like Spiderman, Superman and Batman are for American heroes.

It's a man in a suit, most people grew up with Power Rangers. That's the show they relate to when they see Tokusatsu. It's the same with anime, many people think a random anime is Pokemon/Dragon Ball/Sailor Moon. If you are not too familiar with something, you just relate it to something that seems close to it.

Men in suits fighting monsters, it's all the same if they aren't interested in it. You watch Tokusatsu very often, you notice the differences quickly, but people who've only watched Power Rangers and sees a Kamen Rider clip, they'll instantly relate it to Power Rangers.

A person who isn't interested in sport, most likely, can't tell the difference between Futebal de Salão and Futsal.

I don't think adult toku is as well developed as, heh, the comic industry in the West. But I guess even then, people will point and say HEH, CHILDREN SHOWS, out of ignorance. I mean, it's in Asia and all. Crazy little land there.

The only one i know who has that is Superman and most of the time he gets made fun of.
There are tons of comments on the internet where superhero suith get made fun of. The only diffrence between the Toku and the Western hero costume issue is that Toku costumes gets called Power Rangers rip offs and Western costumes just get called childish or campy.

Toku costumes( fore the most people) fall in between the Batman suith and the iron man one. . To them the Toku suith fall into a B movie categorie where it is not realistic enough like Batman and doesn,t look good enough like Iron Man. Most of these suiths get put into the "Go Go Power Rangers" categorie by the audience. A categorie were the audience thinks the suith looks to cheap or campy. And what does a cheap and campy armored metal-suit remind most people of? Power Rangers.
This is not only the case with Toku through it also happend to Blue Beetle because the metal suith looked to cheap and poorly made so it gets put in the same categorie.

They probably accept it because it wouldn,t have monsters blowing up fore no reason afther they get kicked.
Then again the suiths( if made poorly) could be put into the Superman categorie where it just looks to campy fore them.( This also happend to Spider-man and the Green Goblin. Spider-man did get beter rep because most people grew up with the suith and comic fans loved it because it was accurate to the comics.)

I think I showed some friends clips of some Kamen Rider show (I forget which one) and their reaction was like "Cool it's like Beetleborgs!" :sweat:

Maybe next time I should show them some Shin Kamen Rider...:laugh:
