Ultraman Retsuden - Ultraman Biography show

Everyone, meet my friend marketing. Marketing, everyone.

Zero is the newest and shiniest and they usually take one of two routes with those - either they're hot **** who are made to seem a little overpowered by comparison to their predecessors (Taro, Zero) or they're trainees who have to train to be their equals (Leo, Mebius). It's always worked this way, I don't get why people are taking Zero's case so personally. :|

Found this.

He's likely a full fledged member of the Ultra Guard now, but is still relatively weak.

He's only at his most powerful in his Nakama Mode, and even then we've seen clear evidence that that only makes him, maybe, equal to the other older Ultras.

Even then we've seen clear evidence that he only reaches that point when he's using his most devastating and dangerous powers, otherwise he is no where near their level.

Mebius' real skill seems to come from drawing power from friendship, and from being able to merge with other Ultras, so this definitely makes sense. He's not really a combat Ultra, not on his own. He's more a support type.

We see the true, clear difference between him and the older ones both in his duel with Leo, where he was bested at EVERY step, and later against Glozam.

Mebius went up against him and the worst he could manage was blowing a hole in him-otherwise he was completely dominated.

UltraSeven, when he showed up, took on Golzam and HE was the one to do the dominating, to the point where it's conceivable he could have killed Glozam himself...but that would have ruined the message of the episode.

I'll note, this is especially notable because UltraSeven is critically weak against extreme cold-and Glozam *IS* extreme cold.

It's one thing I respect Mebius for-it did not attempt to try to make the newest warrior look like the strongest thing evaaaaaaaah.

Mind they have more then made up for lost time with Zero, but that's neither here nor there.

"Nakama Mode"? Is this the "Phoenix" form he got after his teammates found out about him?

Also, since Leo was beating him during the "training", what happened to convince Leo to finally accept Mebius as Earth's defender?

Finally, you stated that UltraSeven had bested Glozam, but decided not to kill him, to teach some sort of lesson. What was that lesson, since Wikipedia implies that Emperor killed Glozam instead?

Ah, I see you haven't seen the show.

I refer to Phoenix form as Nakama Mode because...well it is empowered by the feelings of his friendship with his human teammates. He literally gains power from friendship.

Mebius stepped up his game and learned the ability Leo taught him-his second strongest actually. It was that determination that made Leo deem him worthy to stand on his own.

Seven wanted the humans to kill Glozam-not anyone else.

Specifically he wanted one of the members, glasses girl, to do it.

I'll give a run down of how that worked.

Due to the last episode the guys are out of commission and the girls are the only ones up and ready to fight, except obviously Mebius.

Mebius fights Glozam...and just gets slaughtered, eventually getting skewered to a dam and frozen solid. Glasses girl, who was there at the time, is breaking down because she thinks he's dead.

Cue UltraSeven as a JAPANESE COWBOY (I love how random that is) riding up to her on his goddamn horse and taking her into the woods away from the battle field, where he tells her of how past Ultras have faced defeat like this, specifically himself, and how the Ultra alone cannot do it all themselves-they have to stand with their human partners.

He assures her Mebius is still alive as well and sends her on her way. Keep in mind, nothing is stopping him from just jumping in and saving Mebius right now.

So Team GUYS formulates a plan, using the beam that was used to revive Seven way back when, to revive Mebius-and modifies some of their existing tech to take Glozam down once and for all.

They fly in, and Glozam shows up. After nearly a minute, Glozam almost destroys the ship that's going to heal Mebius, only then does Seven himself step in.

Which is in character for Seven-he possibly more then any other wants the humans to stand on their own feet and be equals.

Seven then beats the crap out of Glozam while they revive Mebius, Mebius joins in, and Seven assists Mebius' Mebius Shoot with his fore head beam, blowing Glozam to pieces.

This allows Glasses Girl to fly in and evaporate the ice creature.

Notably Seven could have easily used his Wide Shot, instead of the forehead beam, and Glozam would have died-or he could have used the Wide Shot AFTER.

But the lesson he wanted to stress-humans can stand on their own.

Enpera had nothing to do with this episode-he killed Mephilas in the next though.

Thanks for the explanations! And for setting me straight on Glozam and Mephilas! I'd misplaced my set of Mebius eps during house-cleanning - before seeing them all. I'll definitely check out these later eps during the Fourth of July.

I'd been concerned about Leo's behavior because it seemed that he was being a jerk, rather than helping Mebius. And, I have to ask, if he was so concerned that Mebius was "unworthy", where was he during all those attacks? Specifically, during the first new monster attack during which the original GUYS team got killed?

On the other hand, I definitely liked the way UltraSeven assisted GUYS' gals, especially Konomi. Perhaps an additional reason he chose her was because her glasses reminded him of his morpher? And, Seven revealed his prescence to a human? Hmm, seems like the Ultras were becoming a bit more open since Mebius came out ...

Your explanation reminds me a lot of Dyna Episode #27, "The Kraken Won't Surface, Part II", when Mai, the smallest, most sheltered member of the team, had to board the stricken super-fortress in a torpedo to re-program the computers. She stepped up quite admirably, and was really bad-ass, in both senses of the word. And, best of all, in her way.

It just seems to me, with all this picking on Mebius, that it needlessly diminished him, causing him to be disrespected by the fans, in spite of his greatest achievements. He destroyed the all-powerful Emperor, something that not even Ultra Father could do. After coming back from the dead ...

What worries me though, is that humanity can't stand on its own, not even in the time of Zeta Associates Pioneers, which is hundreds, if not thousands, of years down the road from GUYS' time, without the help of active Ultras. Bolis' civilization was virtually wiped out, with Ultraman himself being immobilized.
