Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters - Full Series TALK UP!

You should. It is one of the greatest anime series of all time and IS the greatest manga of all time.

Not one character in the series is pointless. Everyone, including the villains, tend to get character development. Everything has a purpose. I started reading it in Oct and I am in Volume 62 right now. I've had to slow down due to 65 being the current volume out.

Man that shonen garbage is so overrated! All shonen is! Yeah it was cool like 8 years ago but what's even the point of the story now? I much prefer shows like 'Makubakumoto the Melancholy Story of Melancholy." It's only 4 episodes long and much more fulfilling then shonen that just goes on and on. Because it's super depressing and dark and that's what makes a show good. If a show doesn't make me want to blow my brains out then what's the point?

Sho Aikawa
Astral Ocean - I don't even want to call it an Eureka Seven product - gave me a legitimate psychological trauma. I didn't know that was possible. It was that bad.

Here's a question before I continue the Aikawa derail: does anyone know how Go-Busters did on DVD? I'm betting about average, but it'd be nice to have some real figures to discuss.

This explains a lot about Aikawa. I just thought he was, like, very bad at writing these shows. :P

While Aikawa is technically a very proficient writer, I think it's a huge mistake to put him on any show with explicitly superheroic themes. It seems that his natural inclination as a writer, if you give him a superhero, is to start telling stories about how that character is actually, secretly, a terrible person. Even in Boukenger, the show isn't really about exploring the wonder and glory of adventure unless Kobayashi or Arakawa is writing. Aikawa ends up writing stories where the premise is along the lines of "Red is actually addicted to adventure and cannot function as a normal human being, and his team are actually adrenaline junkies caught up in a sick man's cycle of addiction."

I think you could get a good Sentai season out of the premise of "adventure," so long as the plots showed how the adventures had positive impact on the wider world the heroes live in. It could be a show that encouraged kids to go out and really get involved in the world around them, helping people and discovering new things. Boukenger's issue was simply that Sho Aikawa will not be the guy to write that show. If you tell Sho Aikawa to write a Sentai season about adventure, he will instead write a bleak deconstruction of a Sentai season about adventure.

Whenever a show I'm watching finishes, there's always a very clear indicator for me as to whether I'll look back at it fondly or not. After I've watched the finale, I get a wistful feeling for the rest of the evening. Not sadness, but nevertheless a generally "down" feeling because I won't get to watch those characters any more. It was when I got that feeling upon finishing Kamen Rider Double (the second Rider show I completed) that I knew I was going to like tokusatsu. It doesn't always mean the show is good. There are shows I freely admit having glaring weaknesses, but which I still look back on fondly for some reason, and they're always ones I got that feeling over (example: Hibiki). Equally there are shows I can admit were smartly written or had some other "good" aspect to them, which I didn't get the feeling over and therefore look back on rather indifferently (Kuuga). I had thought I'd burned it out with the sheer volume of toku I watch now. It's been a long time since I've had a reaction like that to a toku. But I did get it with Go-Busters. Yes, I agree with a lot of the criticism. I even disagree with some of the things people point to as positive points of the series. But last week I got that wistful feeling and I'm sure that like those previous occasions I shall look back fondly on Go-Busters.

Oh, and Boukenger rocks precisely because they're a bunch of crazy thrill-seekers who see saving the world and kicking the bad guys' asses as a personal challenge, rather than standing there making the same old Clark Kent speeches about justice etc etc like so many of their peers.

According to someone on Rangercrew it's on course to have the highest Sentai video/DVD sales of all time. They didn't provide any figures or sources though so I have no idea how true that is.

That probably explains why we're getting a Go-Busters Returns V-Cinema then. Don't they only tend to do them if the DVD sales do better than expected?

Is that so? I may see if I can get someone to dig around for numbers, then. That would be really interesting, if true.

Would it go some way to compensate for ratings/sales or is there still the problem of trying to please Bandai/the network?

Well, Shinkenger had high DVD sales, but did Goseiger?

It's hard to say. Where I find the notion interesting is in light of some things I've learned lately about how the Japanese fandom feels about Go-Busters. In complaints about the show on Japanese forums, there's a very passionate outpouring of the idea that Sentai should be for children, and Go-Busters is flawed/wrong/bad because it was clearly made with an older audience in mind. Really high home video sales would, in my opinion, explain where this perception that Go-Busters abandoned children in favor of collectors was coming from, and why Japanese fans were so very angry about it. (Frankly, this could also explain why Kyoryuger is such an intentionally, aggressively juvenile series.)

Well, Shinkenger had high DVD sales, but did Goseiger?

Nah. Basically average. The Goseiger Returns thing was probably greenlit for production before Goseiger even started airing.
