Super Robot Red Baron - Talk ON!

When August said "39 action packed explosive episodes" he wasn't joking. I've finished disc 2 and I'm blown away by this ****.

I'll hit up disc 3 at work tonight and post more thought tomorrow or monday when I have free time.

Each episodes just gets more dramatic and badass. This IS Tokusatsu.

I'm hoping that I can get the money to purchase this set, but if that fails then I have the whole thing on my queue for Netflix, because it looks awesome :buttrock: .

Speaking of Red Baron, a few days ago I found out there was an anime adaptation of it back in '94:

...and that intro is done by Shinichi Ishihara....epic...

But, anyways, yeah, I'm gonna try and get a copy of this when I can, because I'm all for supporting more Tokusatsu here in the US!

This is without a doubt the BEST Toku that has been released in North America. I'm absolutely in love with this series. Hell, I'm about to buy Super Robot Mach Baron (the sequel) in a few days.

Some questions:
#1. Can Red Baron be considered the original true Toku Mecha or was it Leopardon?.
#2. Besides Red Baron, Mach Baron, and DaiTetsujin 17, what other Mecha series were released back then?. I want them all if they are as awesome as Red Baron.

I *think* Giant Robo is considered the earliest one, being from the late 60's. IIRC there's a short-lived live-action version of "Testujin 28" that proceeds it by a couple years, but I don't know much about that one other than it exists. August/somebody?

Giant Robo is a pretty awesome series, and destruction scenes from that get used all throughout the 70's. The "Toei Splash" and "Toei Gas Station Explosion" being two notable ones. Daitestujin 17 is good too, that's a personal favorite. It is just out of control, and it has one of the most exciting ending credit sequences ever.

GIANT ROBO is indeed the first giant live action superhero robot -- not counting Garamon (from ULTRA Q), or King Joe and Windam (or the Robot Ultra Seven) from ULTRA SEVEN and the giant robot monsters of CAPTAIN ULTRA (although MARINE KONG was the first monster robot). Don't forget Mogera from Ishiro Honda's THE MYSTERIANS (1957), either!

While the original live action GIGANTOR was big, but he was only ten feet tall. Hardly competition for Daisaku Kusama/Johnny Sokko's colossal automaton. :)

It's good, but it's a little more like ULTRAMAN; the team doesn't get into the same number of fights with the baddies, and they have jets to attack the enemy robots with. It's just not as dynamic in the human scenes department, but the robot fights are more refined (IMHO).

Aight I'm gonna pick that series up.

One thing I love about Red Baron is the fight scenes, Christ some of them go on for longer then 2 minutes (like current toku).

Tasty, too! At least Ryu Noguchi was thinking outside of the box when designing the robots for RED BARON. They are unlike any other show before or since.
