So Why Does Joe Odagiri Hate Kamen Rider?

Anyone who spits on the roots that got them to where they are now deserves to be punched in the face.

Sometimes, some people have to completely discard of what they did for Tokusatsu, etc., to achieve even more fame & popularity. Doesn't mean that they hate what they did, though.

Look at Masaru Nagai, the actor who played as Tatsuya (TimeRed) from Timeranger, for example.

People are hardly their television roles. That's why it's acting. Conversely speaking, if actors were actually like their characters in real life, I'd be scared for my life to meet Takashi Ukaji if he was a real-life Kougami (No matter how Subarashi) or Hagino Takashi who played Asakura Takeshi.

But Odagiri enjoyed his role as Kuuga, writing some notes in the Kuuga Book and attending reunion parties for the show that they held about 7 years ago. He and Takedera Producer are really close apparently (Though this is all Japanese wikipedia), so it's not like he doesn't like it.

Yeah, Odagiri likes Kuuga itself, but...just hates everything else tokusatsu and henshin hero...

he probably hates those flashy, colorful, cheesy shows which is associated with kuuga's genre...most of those shows are those that is targeted to preschoolers, yet there's adults who still likes them...

Also, sometimes, agencies don't allow certain actors to return to their past roles.Take Takeru Satoh, for instance.Even if he really yearned to go back to Den-O, his agency would prevent him from doing so.

Because they don't want the client to be associated with kids' shows, especially since most Sentai/Rider leads are young actors just starting their careers. It's considered fine as a first step on the ladder, but not "serious" acting (see the reported comments made by Odagiri and by Tamao Sato) and not something that performers want to do after they're already established. I heard that Tetsuji Tamayama's agency won't let him talk about Gaoranger for that reason, too

Doing a live action adaptation of a Shonen Jump comic book isn't really too different as far as I'm concerned. But then again, Shonen Jump is aimed at an older audience than Kamen Rider...
