Scientists discover planet capable of supporting life

A team of planet hunters from UC Santa Cruz (not to be confused with Dog The Bounty Hunter) have found a planet three times the size of our own that might support life. Scientists have been using the HIRES spectrometer on the Keck I Telescope to keep an eye on the Gliese 581 red dwarf star in the constellation Libra for about 11 years now, and among its many virtues have learned that the planet Gliese 581g has the potential for life. Indeed, it is being billed as "the first potentially habitable exoplanet," meaning that it's in "the zone" where it's neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water. Although it's rather Earth-like in some respects, there are some stunning differences: for instance, the planet doesn't spin on its axis, so one side is always dark (and probably 25 degrees below zero) while the other side is probably rather pleasant, or "shirt-sleeve weather," as one of the discoverers, Steven Vogt, put it. Indeed, he goes on to estimate that "chances for life on this planet are 100 percent." Those are pretty good odds! There's no word on when Virgin Galactic will be offering vacation packages to this hit destination, or even when it will be feasible to make the 20 light year voyage.

The only major differences between it and Earth are its size - it is much larger - and it doesn't spin on its axis - leaving half the planet in constant darkness, and half in constant light.

Pretty fascinating stuff.

I'd love to imagine the look on the astronauts' faces when they cautiously exit their spaceship with weapons at the ready only to be greeted by a bunch of fuzzy aliens lazily eating vegetation. :p

Thoughts?

Yeah, read that one in Yahoo News, they called it "Goldilocks Planet" I think, since it's not too hot, not too cold, just right.

Now we just need a way to travel through space need the speed of light, send something and wait... 50-60 years for news.

We need a Space Battleship damn it. Well at least a well armed and defended one incase we all run into something not friendly, but at least keep the ship looking friendly enough to not get blown out of the sky. Then again... what is friendly looking to an alien? o.O

Edit: Oh and send a transmission of Star Wars and Star Trek to them, let them figure out if it's real or not. XD

Considering both of those aired over the air at some point they already saw those. And plenty of other stuff too. We've been beaming stuff into space for nearly a century now.

A planet not spinning on its axis... its like Vinea but with only one sun!
