Samurai Sentai Shinkenger - Talk Up!

It's true, I can see how Jan would have been a whole lot more irritating than he was, depending on how he was played.
Yeeeaah. I remember reading that he would be a jungle boy with his own language and...whoacrap I really hated the idea of this character, but Suzuki really gave him an interesting spin and made him likable.

There's a reason I never liked movies like Jungle Book and such. I don't really tend to do well with the whole "raised by animals" thing. But Jan made it cool.

Yeah, same here. So, I dunno, maybe I'm inclined to be forgiving? But while the show isn't perfect, there are some things about its writing style I find really interesting and admirable. It's a character-driven Super Sentai about characters I don't detest and it hits some other personal buttons, too.

My large problem with the show (outside of the mecha fights I don't care for, but understand they're a staple of the genre as it stands) is the soft-resets on the characters. The lessons learned or the moments had between the characters have no permanence, outside of any episodes that forward the conflict with the show's villains. The characters don't really move forward as much as they shuffle side to side, and then take small hops forward every now and then. It bothers me.

But the story beats themselves, taken alone, are well done.

Shinkenger seems to be flirting with attempts to write characters more realistically.

Traits and subplots are carried through multiple episodes instead of rangers relying on focus eps to get personalities. During focus eps, you won't see someone suddenly become a better person, instead change is far more gradual and people backslide when a change is difficult (such as in Takeru's case).

This is how I interpret things, anyway. I can see someone just taking it as "WTF, nothing is happening."

Indeed. I stopped religiously watching after Deka. Since then I've done the first few eps, ranger debuts and the last few. Shinken is the first in awhile I've watched all the way through. BoukenRed was cool, but I disliked the rest of his crew.

me too either. i love when BoukenRed/Akashi doing his style likeing snaping his finger and saying "Attack!" :anime:

but Ryou/Ryuranger is awesome as he looks. maybe to Takeru-sama seems like Geki from Zyuranger but has Hybrid of Akashi and Takeru from Maskman! just in circumstances
:anime:

Ryuu tended to very mushy-mushy and kept pining about Rie. I don't recall Takeru ever being that way.

But he was able to step up to the plate when he needed to and he was, essentially, decent. Takeru on the other hand is just intrinsically a bad person.

 You cite a show with characters that were essentially non-entities?

He was still better than Takeru!

Jan is cool. Sure he got a bit annoying at times but they had such a killer story attached to him that it was ok. KENJI OBA was his father for **** sakes!!!.

I still think the writers enjoyed PRWF.

I think you really don't hate Takeru this much, the guy hasn't done anything to be hated. I think this is more of a you having a crush on the actor and knowing he isn't interested so you then proceed to take ur frustrations out in this thread.

:loltongue:

Takeru pretends to be this standoffish lord so he wouldn't look weak in front of the others. Underneath that, he cares about them. Especially when he wanted to make sure Jii gets to spend his day off. Originally he didn't want them in the first place just to protect them. Which is why he gave them a choice.

WTF? There are many characters I dislike as much as Takeru (Go-on Blue, MagiGreen, Hurricane Blue, Sasword ...) but those shows aren't airing now, so I don't get as much chance to bitch about them :P
