PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4: On Stranger Tides in 2011

Weird, I really thought they were working on a tight budget with the movie, since there were almost lesser action scenes than before. I appreciated it, but it just lacked the epic feel the 1st three had.

The lack of ship battles didn't bother me since I didn't think they were very well handled in the Pirates series anyway. Too much supernatural and nonsensical special effects drivel and not enough actual maritime tactics or aims. It's a good thing, too--can you imagine how silly a ship skirmish would have been with Blackbeard's whack flamethrower cannon?

Luckily, with Gore Verbinski gone a lot of the more fantastic elements of the series were toned down and in their place we got some quite satisfactory swordplay and a welcome return to stunts and setpieces of a more physical nature, which I really dug. I agree that this is the best Pirates movie since Curse of the Black Pearl, mostly because it featured more of Jack Sparrow, who is, let's face it, the real reason people like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in the first place. He's such a great character with an excellent blend of traits and it was a treat to see him headline a vehicle of his own. I might not even mind seeing another film follow this one up if it's anywhere near the same level of excitement and fun.

Look into the movie Cutthroat Island if you're a fan of pirate action and are looking for something a bit more grounded in reality, or at least more traditional swashbuckling fare (it's got hubba hubba Geena Davis in the starring role as well as a few skimpy outfits, if you really need more of a reason). There are quite a few ship engagements in the film, including a massive finale in which the crews from each ship are frantically boarding and battling the others, and it's among the best (and only) realized pirate films since old greats like Captain Blood.
