New coalition of manga publishers going after US scanlation sites

Except a lot of those websites also provide manga which is not released in the West, or only released with bad translation. Plus of course a lot of manga creators don't deserve that 'support'.
That is BS. Just because you do not like something does not mean others do not. You do not decide what deserves support and what doesn't.

I never said I'm reading them.

Then there's no problem and you wont need scanlation sites. You can just buy the ones you are reading cause you think the creator deserves the support =P

I'm not sure what to think of this. While i'd like everyone to buy manga I know that it can get very expensive and take up a lot of space =P. Especially for US releases. I guess it's a good thing to get this to become less mainstream though.

Also, if you buy just to support the original creator then buying anything that's released more than 2 years ago seems pointless to me. The money you spend on it wont be going there anymore. Correct me if i'm wrong though.

That's exactly why I said people should only use scanlations if the manga they want is not already available legally

^If it'll be like like that, then that would be fine. Because I don't want them to take away the unofficially released manga away from us, otherwise we won't be able to read them!

Creators still get a cut of sales of old works. It's called the royalty system. Most writers, after awhile, essentially make a living off of sales of back catalog works.

What about manga that are out of print?
I love that old argument:

"I only download what I don't like so it's not hurting anyone"
That sorta works, as long as they actually buy those manga they like. I know i've had a few cases where I'm not sure if I would have bought the manga if I knew I'd end up not liking it.

The author will still get his royalty. The way royalty systems work, the publisher is legally obligated to give the author gets a certain percentage of every sale, even if the work is no longer in print, provided the work sold. "Out of print" just means that the publisher isn't printing new copies after the current supply sells out, not that the publisher no longer sells the work.

Now, if you buy a manga second-hand, the author gets no royalty... but presumably he got his cut the first time the work was sold. It's also worth noting that with foreign releases, the author may get a lump sum payment as part of the licensing fee paid by a company like TokyoPop for the rights to his/her work. Then the author may get additional royalties off of all foreign sales.

The actual conditions of payment probably differ slightly from author to author, based on the creator's status and the Japanese publisher's relationship to the American publisher. Hiromu Arakawa probably gets a bigger cut of FMA sales through Viz than, say, the author of a random yaoi manga gets through June Manga.

In short, if you give a retailer money for a new copy of a given manga, chances are some percentage of that money is ending up in the pockets of the works creator(s).

I wish they would just put the damn mangas into a digital format to download like an eBook. That would be awesome if they put some mangas onto the iBook store, perhaps price them half price since there's no paper or shipment involved and I'll like that.

The reason why people scanlate is either due to the inaccurate translation or it never came here. If they just put them online for purchase for a digital format, there would be less piracy. You wouldn't have to worry of it being out-of-print of any of that bullshit as it always would be available to people. In fact they could sell them by chapter ,volume , or sets like they sell episodes or seasons for tv shows .

The mere ignorance of this matter is all the publisher's fault since they aren't converting to digital like everybody else has been. Go with the times or risk being left in the dust.

Ah the excuses people come up with to justify pirating stuff. I am pretty sure that nearly everyone on these forums has pirated something. If you have downloaded an mp3 or fansub you have. That is fine we all do it. But when people make up excuses I just kind of laugh. But that blaming the publisher/producer/creator that takes the cake.
