Kamen Rider OOO - Talk Up!

It's better than a show like Gekiranger, Abaranger or even W where such an effort is made to "humanize" the enemy that the threat is completely lost - I'm fearing OOO will go the same path by trying to show a softer side to Ankh (so far, not yet, but he's already shown a fondness of sorts for Eiji.) At least having them want to destroy the world makes them evil. The result isn't great (case in point: http://writebadlywell.blogspot.com/2010/05/make-your-villain-genuinely-evil.html) but if you try to develop the villains too well or create audience sympathy, you will get a "Rooting for the Empire" situation where they become more popular than the hero(es)

I agree that this is a problem in a lot of shows, but the solution isn't "make your villains less interesting" it's "make your heroes more interesting."

For instance with W, I don't know about you, but I've never seen a single person who wasn't rooting for Shotaro & Philip or even prioritizing the Sonozaki drama over the heroes being heroes. W made sure you always knew who the good guys were and that they were the people you should be caring about.

By contrast, Goseiger wants to be a simple show about simple heroes fighting simple villains. I'm okay with that, personally, because the fights are well-shot and the episodes are independently entertaining. If other people don't feel the same? Well, that's cool. They'll be happier finding something that is their bag.

The difference between those "humanized" villains and Goseiger's villain-of-the-arc is that they are probably more interesting to watch. Regarding Abaranger, I for one, was interested in whether or not Asuka's wife would be able to keep her masquerade up for long after her brainwashing wore off or if Mikoto would stay alive to the end.

It wrecks the show though when people are more invested in the villains than the good guys. The best non-toku example I can think of is (sorry for diverging fandom talk) Harry Potter where by the end of the books people cared more about the evil characters than the hero. Early tokusatsu was just the Rangers/Rider (good guys) vs the enemy (bad), that works out a whole lot better than the "shades of gray morality" thing that goes on now

But Gamel! Everyone must love Gamel!

It just strikes me as very arrogant to make the argument that a lot of posters here do (and I've been guilty of this myself) which is basically: "Back in the day people were satisfied with cliche plots and character roles, now audiences are more sophisticated, we want better explanations/more development/more subtle characterization/whatever." In the sense of the villains having no motive, most Showa series are no better than Goseiger

This. The idea of making villains more human isn't to make them more sympathetic. It's to give them more complex and interesting roles in the story. The idea that the Sonozakis are sympathetic to anyone (except maybe Wakana) is completely horrifying to me. Even Shroud is a thoroughly reprehensible individual.

The point of giving someone like Saeko Sonozaki conflicted feelings about her family is to make her feel more like an actual person and ground her in reality. It's not hard to imagine someone like Saeko existing or doing toned-down versions of all the awful things she does. The fact that I can imagine Saeko being real doesn't make her less threatening.

It's quite the opposite. I can relate her awful behaviors to awful things actual people have done, which makes Saeko seem much more dreadful to me.

Godzilla X MechaGodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. were always two of my favourite Goji flicks :castlerock:

Monster Zero & Terror of Mechagodzilla > ALL. :170:

There's Godzilla vs Mothra & all monsters attack.

Awesome. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look for all of them. I'm still in the mood to watch Kaiju films.

Or e) Both C and D.

I like this E option.

Agreed. That's why 555 was so good.
