Help! Which Shinkenoh should I buy?

Yeah, the articulation and poseability is what drew me to the candy toy model kits. I can also repaint the kit versions much more easily than the DX versions, and since I only really collect Black Versions, that's a big plus for me.

I just scored Samurai Haoh off yahoo Japan for Y4500 and Kyoryuu Origami for Y2000 through EX. I already had a ShinkenOh that I repainted as a black version (I really need to post pics of that), but now I'll have both that and Samurai Haoh to display once I go through the long and laborious process of painting and assembly.

The DX versions look nice and all for the most part, but they tend to be pretty bricklike once they're assembled. Daibouken and its variations are the only ones that have had any poseability at all.

What do you use to paint them Tenrai?

I have a few Tamiya water based arcyilcs, but I'm looking at expanding my horizons and trying out different paint options.

How well will Gundam markers work on these?

From my own experience, Gundam Markers work to an absolutely adequate degree. But it helps to do things like basecoat white for brighter colours, sand/file a surface if you're doing that, as it helps the marker paint adhere better, etc. I managed to paint Mougyudaioh's shoulders to a fairly solid white by sanding all the surfaces and doing 3 or 4 coats.

It also helped to have a brush handy as an additional spreading tool- sometimes the marker tips can cause unfortunate scratches in the paint if you aren't careful.

The candy toys offer something that the DX version doesn't: and that's articulation and fully movable joints.


May as well ask since this thread is up: What do you think the best way to paint these model kits would be? I have some Tamiya paints but I'm not really that good with them yet...I've been considering getting some Gundam Marker though.

I use super glue for some stickers and I used clothing paint (one you use for clothes) mixed with thin paint make make a nice, and beautiful color that last.

candy toys don't take to much space, offer movable joints and does not look like a brick. and they are cheap and detail for their size, and fun to put together.

Yeah, gundam markers work really well. I also use Tamiya TS series spray paints for base coats and repainting.

If you do go for a fairly radical recolor, be careful-- too heavy a coat of paint on the connector/joint parts and they can gum up and either not snap together properly, or on movable joints, freeze up and break. But if you're just looking to brighten up colors or give it a pearl/metallic color base, the TS sprays work really well. And you can always do what I do and use bits of masking tape to block off parts that could cause problems during assembly.
