Garo: Shine and Flower

Can Kaoru really be considered a heroine when she doesn't fight in any way and her primary role is emotional support to Kouga?

I think both Shine and Flower suffer from forced romance. Rian is like a less well done Jabi; she basically believes that she needs to be in love with Ryuga in order to be a "real" woman or a rounded person.

A problem that a lot of people seem to have with Shine is not liking the supporting cast, but now that
Burai and Enhou are dead, and Takeru and Aguri aren't returning for Gold Storm
I don't think it should put anyone off watching if they plan to continue through to Gold Storm.

Result from googling :
Heroine
1.
a woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities.
2.
the principal female character in a story, play, film, etc.

But yeah, I should use female lead instead.
From the start, Rian maybe the one who forced her romance to Ryuga. Not really forced actually, she is merely playing around with him because he is Garo. There is nothing seem serious before Ryuuga get jealous and then console her when she get dumped. It is more like platonic relationship until Hakana become reason to trigger Rian obsession to Ryuga.

[HIDE]Are Takeru and Aguri really will not appear as cameo in season 5? Because I think they match up with supporting Makai Knight in season 1 and 2.
Takeru is Rei and Aguri is Tsubasa. Season 5 synopsis include that two item separate into different direction. What if one of them go to Takeru's jurisdiction? There is no news about other supporting Makai Knight except the one who from my view, didn't seem be a good guy.[/HIDE]

I actually like Yami wo Terasu Mono (aka Shine) slightly more than Makai Senki, although I like both of them really well.

Shine had a continuous story plot which kept me wanting to watch the next episode all the time, and it was really interestingly well written. You get story plot progress all the time.

Makai Senki felt a bit dragged for me. As someone mentioned about the Seal of Destruction earlier, they first tell you that "Omg a seal of destruction! We must remove it asap!" but then for 20 episodes nothing is done about it. Its tiring wanting to know something, or wanting something to happen, and nothing happens seemingly forever.

I do agree the main cast of Shine, Ryuuga, is weak. He doesn't have any really cool or likeable personality.

[HIDE]They may make a guest appearance but so far they haven't been mentioned at all in connection with the show. Since it has already started, it's probably safe to say they aren't going to be regulars[/HIDE]

Shine episode 6 sure was... something. I don't often see music powerups for the MOTW. Flower episode 6 didn't bring any themes that I haven't seen with Kouga, but it was okay.

What kept me watching Makai Senki during the first half or so was the visual aspect. There was quite a bit that was different from usual toku, like the stuff Leo and Kaoru saw on their walk, or that theater episode.

Yeah, but Flower's fourth episode was absolutely phenomenal. One of the best Garo episodes ever.

Having said that I think "Flower" has some fantastic individual episodes. For example episode nine really is one of the creepiest tokusatsu episodes I've ever seen.

I just finished that one and it was pretty creepy. But in a different way than I expected. The preview made me think it was going to be similar to the fish Horror episode of season 1, which it didn't end up being.

Meanwhile Shines keeps reinforcing the notion that these guys aren't really the knightly type, or even very good at this job. Wonder if the organization went to the gutter or all the competent people just had something more important to deal with.

With Garo i never watch the previews but that Makai no Hana episode did have me thinking we were having a repeat of the fish episode until the end. I'm glad it wasn't the fish again though

I'm going at these a little slower now but I got to episode 11 for both of them.

Despite having a clearer main plot, Shine isn't necessarily better at progression than the first two seasons. Episodes 10 and 11 were only related to the main story because SG1 people appeared, and they barely did anything. but at least we got this:

The way Ryuga talks and all, it's pretty understandable that someone would mistake him for a serial killer

HwydJaY.avif

I'm not sure what they're trying to do with Takeru. At first he was just really horny, but now he's almost stalking someone...?

He's still so far more of a character than this guy, at least.

LLuD9AU.avif

I'm not sure what they're going for with him. He doesn't strike me as anything more than a generically aloof supporting character.

But the individual episodes were still neat. Gonza trying to make Mayuri feel more like family is one of those things about Garo that I feel could work pretty well in a more kid-friendly show, and the manga episode was just generally memorable. The Horror in that episode just makes me question how much of someone's older personality still remains after becoming a Horror. Episode 9 suggested the guy was so messed up that he didn't notice he was evil, but this guy seemed like he had a pretty strong connection to his past.

On a less serious note, it's... interesting to see that people still drew manga on actual paper decades in the future, but this season has hardly made any effort to look futuristic.
