I once became of fan of them. Previous favorites includes Bon Voyage, Namidi no Hurricane and Ai no Nurse Carnival (?).

This is before I got into Paradise Go Go and SCANDAL.

As for MK... They might be doing an update and placing it in Scorpion's point of view... After Sub-zero, Scorpion was one of the most popular characters. If you think about it, Liu Kang and the rest have already been, in my opinion, over exposed. It would be nice to exploit the rivalry between SZ and Scorpion.

Shang Tsung was more in line with the Story of Liu Kang, so maybe that's why they didn't use that.
