Dynaman was ruined by American TV?

I found 5 of them on youtube.

They only ever dubbed six.

Six episodes of the series were shown in the United States on the USA Network's Night Flight and alternately Nickelodeon's Special Delivery in 1987-88 as a dubbed parody, simply titled Dynaman.

I've always wondered what would have happend if the series got done right to the end. Can you even imagine what they would have done with the Dark Knight arc?. :laugh:

I actually stumbled on this back in the 80s, and thought it was the funniest thing ever. I still do. Sadly, the show did go downhill insanely quickly. The first couple of episodes are fantastic, and the third and fourth had some great stuff, but the Lucky Pierre and Spunky eps were kind of terrible-- it felt like they blew all the good writing in the first couple of eps. Still, the convention ep had some good moments.

I'm not so sure that Toei was the big issue so much as their use of a lot of unlicensed pop/rock hits. In fact, the whole thing feels like it was a private project that managed to get released almost by accident... but I'm really glad it did. It was my first exposure to sentai and the guys from Kids In The Hall, and I love it.

I really disliked Dynaman, but this dub was a real knee-slapper. It's not something to be taken seriously.

Looking back on it, I'm of two minds about the Night Flight Dynaman dub.

On the one hand, it was funny especially at the time. Though some of it feels a little uncomfortably "durhur, Asians." to me now.

I think one problem with it was you had a parody of something nobody really knew anything about over here. So there's no context for the joke other than in a chop-sokky kind of way. Possibly even helping to enforce the idea that if you bring it to America you have to "Americanize" it. Considering how shitty your average dub for something like a kung-fu movie or a Godzilla movie was during this time I don't think it did Sentai a lot of favors as an intro to American audiences.

Well, except for maybe with kids like me who even while laughing were thinking "This stuff looks kinda cool. I wonder what its really like."

I remember feeling this way a little bit about the MST3K episode Prince of Space. Most of what was stupid about it was the way it was dubbed, the way it was cut, and stuff that mostly felt like an artifact of "well we were making this in the 50s on a TV budget, what the hell do you want?"
