Customs Charging in the UK

Customs charging in the UK seems to be such an odd thing. I've been charged customs once, and checking my tracking now, looks like I'm gonna be charged again. What I'm curious about is, does they shipping method affect the customs charges?

Last time I was charged it was EMS, this time it's EMS and looks like I'm going to be charged. But Sometimes I don't get charged when I use EMS. And I've ordered things worth more than what I got charged for last time. Never been charged with SAL or AIRMAIL either.

So Brits, let's talk up about this stuff.

It's absolutely random, with a guarantee that almost everything going through near Xmas will get checked. 3 items in a row since late Jan now I've got from HLJ by SAL and no customs. The last one was DX Gosei Great too! There was no way that was anywhere close to the £18 under which anything automatically goes through.

Damn. That's weird then. Looks like I might have to pay another £25 on top of my £50 I already payed. Uggggh.

Anyways, I think it's random and most of the time, shipments from online stores are the one that got victimized.

It's more apparent on boxes marked with the shops name on it, for example I got two packages via EMS on severa occasions, one from HLJ and the other from EX, each time I got charged for my order from HLJ and never via EX. Of course part of that is cos EX marks down the value but when it happens with cstoys packages which have no markings on them, its quite apparent that when they see a bigass logo they go all out in checking it's value and slapping you with a somethign fierce customs charge.

I don't get the way you're customs works, here we only get charged whatever the taxes here would be ... Plus generally a $5 bs "handling fee" <- though that does not happen all the time :S
