Excellent show. They were able to create a synthesis of everything that makes Batman's character and his world great. It was just as dark as it needed to be without going too far or losing Batmans basic heroism. The series had action, drama, humor, in alot of ways it had it all. I think this is true even in the early days when Fox S&P was being ridiculous with it's restrictions the creative teams still had enough room that they could improvize some things and more often than not the story benefitted from the extra subltety. (Though the "not in the face" rule is ridiculous by any standard.)
The Dini/Timm work has actually become my favorite version of Batman even above the movies or the comics themselves even though it is obvious the series owes so much to Batmans entire existance. Which is something else I liked. It's not just Adam West or just Frank Miller. The vison of Batman made by everyone from Bill Finger to Marshall Rogers is in the mix to.
At a time when the movies were getting more silly and the comics more convoluted and drowning the character in darkness to the point of absurdity, this show was the one place left on Earth where I could see Batman as he was meant to be. A haunted hero in a dark world who turns tragedy into triumph through his brains, skill, and unstoppable determination guided by his nobility and conscience.
Despite whatever Frank Miller might say, I know who the real goddamn Batman is and you can find him pretty easily in this show.

What I liked about not just BTAS, but the entire DCAU, is the new original characters they create for the series; some are translated back into the comics. :laugh:

My favorite ep of BTAS has to be Legends of the Dark Knight which presents in animated form a [HIDE]typical Dick Sprang/Bill Finger showdown with the Joker, and a few faithfully animated scenes from Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. [/HIDE]My fave scenes are the DKR ones which has dialogue taken verbatim from Miller's work.

The greatest animated show ever produced in my opinion.
I own all 4 seasons on DVD as well as all 3 seasons of Batman Beyond.
Watching this show in the afternoon around 3:00 is that special moment that takes me back to my childhood. Literally... everytime I pop the disc in my DVD player and watch it during the day makes me feel like 6 years old all over again. It's a great feeling.

I'm a huge fan of DCAU, execpt for The Batman, Teen Titans and The Legion of Superheroes because they are not part of DCAU.
Batman The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures were all fantastic, along with Batman Beyond, Superman The Animated Series, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

i didnt mind teen titans but we never really saw the titans as civillans or found out who slade was which sucked

Batman: TAS was'nt perfect, and (shock!) had shitty episodes too, but none as bad as TNBA had at times. I can only count four or five good episodes, and that does'nt include World's Finest (also a part of Superman's episode run)
Out of TNBA's best storylines, one of them is an adaptation of an existing comic ("Mad Love"), one is part of an anthology episode ("Holiday Knights"), one is a tribute story to two classic comic artists ("Legends of the Dark Knight"), and one is a DREAM ("Over The Edge"). The rest are'nt up to much and you don't hear them talked about more than those episodes. The only other ones I like are "Judgment Day" and the episode where Robin falls for a girl later revealed to be an existing part of Clayface, arguably a story that is so creepy I'm surprised it was aired
The Batman is one of those shows that sadly varies from season to season so much, that when it has a completly excellent one, nobody really pays attention to it and dismisses it as not being "true Batman" or "crap" without watching it. These people are idiots, biased goons with firm loyalty to one aspect of the franchise to the extent they don't want to think the show has traits better than their PRECIOUS, HIGH AND MIGHTY DCAU.
Crapfests like "Critters", "Batgirl Returns" and "I've got Batman in my Basement" make the near entirety of The Batman's first season look like Alan Alda's run on M.A.S.H. For all it's failings, The Batman has had episodes that are just as worthy as any episode in the DCAU (this also has a lot to do with Alan Burnette and Greg Wiesman contributing), Titans too has had superb animation and excellent storylines when it's not being a psudo-anime wannabe. Legion has'nt had a chance to improve yet, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt
Titans indeed is the same, it has two amazing seasons (two and four), but it's psudo-anime comedic episodes and lack of exploring plot holes when the oppertunity services is what ultimatley condems it.
Slade was SLADE, his real name in the comics, they could'nt use his alias "Deathstroke" on american television (but in the Japanese dub, he was addressed by that name)
As for who he was, he was a villain, pure and simple. That's all that needs to be known. Slade has such a disturbing backstory that they could'nt possibly have explored it properly in the series

I liked Batgirl Returns. Not the best ep, of course. That honor goes to Heart of Ice. But it was defintely better than say...Moon of the Wolf.
